Was it an over-share of epic national security proportions?

Critics say Obama administration officials jeopardized national security by working too closely with the producers of an upcoming movie about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

First, here’s WUPW with the headline:

“Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch says it’s obtained documents that indicate the CIA and Defense Department gave the filmmakers special access including a tour of the CIA’s model of the bin Laden compound...”

Other access, according to those documents, include access to a “planner, operator and commander of SEAL Team 6.”

Kathryn Bigelow, best known for her Academy Award-winning film “The Hurt Locker,” is directing the upcoming film in question.

Conservatives are raising eyebrows over the level of access new documents suggest she might have gotten. Politico’s Josh Gerstein says...

“The documents ... show the White House and the CIA also rolled out the welcome mat for the filmmakers. … CIA officials seemed aware that cooperating with Boal was in some tension with the government’s public line that it was trying to crack down on leaks.”

But White House officials say all the same information was given to the press corps. Fox’s Ed Henry doesn’t seem to be buying it.

“The White House press corps got a lot of information about the bin Laden raid but the administration never made Navy SEAL planners available to us. And I’ve never gotten an invite over to the CIA’s vault.”

The vault Henry’s referring to is a CIA building where some of the planning took place. Pentagon officials say the building was empty when the producers visited. But on MSNBC, a different take from the network’s Jim Miklashevski.

“But anybody at that level connected to SEAL Team 6 would have been a highly, tightly-held secret. And quite frankly, some of us reporters here at the Pentagon were a little jealous they had that access.”

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little says the meeting with the raid’s planner never ended up happening — and that the Defense Department regularly engages filmmakers with the goal of making them “as realistic as possible.” Politico reports, the Pentagon’s Inspector General says an investigation is underway into what was disclosed by Defense Department officials.

<![CDATA[Dan Harmon Replaced as 'Community' Showrunner]]> Sun, 20 May 2012 04:00:02 -0500

BY LAUREN ZIMA

After a fan fight to keep it on the air and those now-infamous Chevy Chase voicemails, “Community” is in the headlines again. Seems things aren’t so communal between the studios and the NBC show’s creator -- Dan Harmon.

News hit Friday that Harmon would be replaced as showrunner of the NBC sitcom. Deadline reported:

“…earlier this week … NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt ... dismissed the notion that the discussion about Harmon possibly stepping down from day-to-day oversight of the show stems from his ongoing feud with co-star Chevy Chase, saying that there are larger factors ...”

Now Harmon has responded. On his personal blog, he writes that no one from Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, has told him why he was replaced -- and says he’s never heard from Bob Greenblatt since he came to NBC.

Harmon says thanks to his contract, he’ll stay on as a consultant for the show, but …

“... if I actually chose to go to the office, I wouldn’t have any power there. …. The same contract also gives me the same salary and title if I spend all day masturbating and playing Prototype 2.”

E! calls Harmon’s post, in a word, a “rant.”

And as Vulture points out, Harmon has admitted to having flaws...

“ … the producer admitted as recently as last month that he was ‘damn bad’ at key elements of his job … As one person familiar with Harmon's strengths and weaknesses told Vulture, ‘Dan is a brilliant at ideas, but he's terrible at [management].’”

But HuffPost’s Maureen Ryan says though Harmon probably is difficult to work with, NBC and Sony should have been more professional.

“When someone rubs you the wrong way, you acknowledge that … and move forward. Why couldn't NBC and Sony do this? … For him to be shown the door without getting a single phone call … is horrifying … NBC and Sony executives have no idea of the s***storm they just created.”

HitFix says either way, the show won’t be the same without Harmon’s vision.

NBC and Sony have not yet responded to Harmon’s blog post.

Try to kiss the man known for “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” and he might just, well, get slappy with it. Check out this footage from the premiere of “Men In Black III” in Russia.

“Come on man, what the hell is your problem, buddy? Hey, sorry, he tried to kiss me on my mouth. This joker, he’s lucky I didn’t sucker-punch him. Oh, sorry, I said that on camera”

The video has spread more quickly than the robot uprising in I, Robot, prompting a variety of responses from viewers on Twitter:

"I hate when I slap one little reporter and my mom gets scared, and says you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air" - DrunXican

Will Smith pushed the reporter and told him no, that was enough. He didnt need to slap him. Would he have done the same w a female? - @PolaRoid_Rage

A reporter for TMZ says that reporter’s affectionate pursuit of happiness crossed a line:

“My stance on this is he’s lucky he didn’t get punched. It has nothing to do with that he’s a guy or that he tried to kiss him on both cheeks. He tried to kiss him on the mouth and he touched his lips.”

So far, the Fresh Prince has not issued a statement about his fresh pimp-slap.

<![CDATA[Same-Sex Marriage Story Leads to Controversy for Pacquiao]]> Thu, 17 May 2012 15:55:00 -0500

BY ANTHONY MARTINEZ

Manny Pacquiao is up against the ropes for comments he reportedly made about gay marriage.
Examiner.com quotes him as “disagreeing” with President Obama’s stance on same-sex marriage.

“Pacquiao's directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin...Leviticus 20:13 says...’If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.’”

Now, Pacquiao is backpedaling, saying – he was misquoted. CNN’s Morning Express says the Examiner article used...

“A Bible verse that says gays must be put to death. Pacquiao wants to clarify, he never quoted that Bible verse and that he does not condemn gay people.”

Now, it’s become a game of he said, she said. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports on the -- misunderstanding.

"I told (the reporter) I'm against same-sex marriage," Pacquiao added. "He said, 'Why?' I said, 'It's the law of God.' That's all I said."
"My favorite verse in the Bible is 'Love one another,' and 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself,'" Pacquiao said. "It's in the Bible: Do not judge. I'm not judging."

Outside the ring, Pacquiao is devout Roman Catholic that ran a landslide victory campaign for Congress in The Philippines in 2010. On ESPN, some critics say this isn’t that surprising in a macho sport like boxing.

“We’re talking about the sport of boxing here. And especially in boxing, any publicity can be great publicity. And I can make a case, this could increase the potential purse for this fight because it could turn Pacquiao into more of a villain.”

That wasn’t the only criticism. Rival Floyd Mayweather tweeted.

“I stand behind President Obama & support gay marriage.”

Then, The Los Angeles Times quotes The Grove Mall in LA where Pacquiao was banned from TV interviews.

"Based on news reports of statements made by Mr. Pacquiao, we have made it be known that he is not welcome at The Grove...”

The writer of the article, Granville Ampong, has since apologized for the article’s erroneous context, with Pacquiao doing the same on Extra TV. Pacquiao says he has close friends and even relatives who are gay.

<![CDATA[Howard Stern Debuts as Honest Judge]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 06:00:01 -0500

BY NICHOLE CARTMELL

He’s outspoken, sometimes-raunchy. Howard Stern debuted as a judge on America’s Got Talent in the season opener Monday night.

Even Stern acknowledged his risky behavior to the audience. USA Today quotes him saying,

“‘These executives at NBC must be out of their mind taking a risk on me. I say I won't make it through the first show -- what do you think?’"

But contrary to critic’s beliefs, he did make it through.

USA Today calls the shows start “solid.” It averaged 10.3 million viewers, although that’s significantly lower than last year’s season opener.

Viewers tell MTV, Stern’s honesty will add to the lineup of judges.

“I work in communications and the way he interviews people, the way he speaks on the air, he is a communicator. So I think as a judge Howard’s going to be who is, honest and just the person you want to listen with and you agree with.”

The Los Angeles Times Amy Rieter was surprised to discover, she found herself liking Stern’s approach.

“It seems we can look forward to him being, at turns, self-effacing and self-promoting, sincere and sassy, surprisingly in command and sometimes downright sentimental. Stern proved himself neither afraid to buzz … nor to encourage nor even to climb up onstage and bestow a warm hug to a weepy wannabe.”

But others note, the first show is a piece of cake -- a honeymoon for new hosts. The New York Daily News says, the real proof of Stern’s staying power, will come later in the season.

“What we don't know yet, and can't, is how well Stern will cut to the truth when the goofy acts have gone home and tough decisions arise between talented people with different skills.”

More typical to his character, Stern tells MTV, the decision to bring Britney Spears to the rival “X-Factor” will be a train wreck.

“I don’t anticipate great opinions from her. I think she’ll sit there like J. Lo ‘oh you’re wonderful, you’re terrific, do you think I can get a perfume endorsement out of this?’”

People magazine says, Stern seems to be enjoying his new role, and the role may be a boon for NBC’s summertime programming hopes.

One of reality TV’s most popular faces passed away Monday. Mitchell Guist is one of the bearded brothers from the History Channel’s “Swamp People.” He died doing exactly what he loved — hunting alligators in Louisiana. CNN reports what happened.

"He appeared to have a seizure...an unidentified man who was in a separate boat towed Guist's boat back to shore, called 911 and performed CPR. Guist was rushed to the hospital but sadly it wasn't enough to save his life."

911 tapes show the lengths one boater took to save him. TMZ.com has that audio.

"You say he's in cardiac arrest?" "Yes sir, we're blowing and pumping the guy's chest right now," the caller said. What happened?" "It looks like he may have had a heart attack."

Fox News reports the alligator hunter was a very likeable character - and had an upcoming birthday...

“Mitchell and his brother Glenn were among the reality show's most popular cast members. He would have turned 49 this Friday.”

The Guist brothers’ website, says the brothers were...

“...Born and raised and still lived in the same house their grandparents once occupied on the Conway Bayou. The Guist brothers march to their own drummer. They are a backwoods duo who hunt, trap and fish to eat.”

On Twitter, Swamp Nation sent regards and condolences - saying Swamp People won’t be the same without him.

According to TV by the Numbers, the latest episode of “Swamp People” aired May 10. The episode was the night’s top cable original with more than 3.8 million viewers.

<![CDATA[End of the '30 Rock' Era]]> Tue, 15 May 2012 04:00:01 -0500

After seven seasons on NBC, Tina Fey’s “30 Rock” will come to an end after the 2012-2013 season.

Alec Baldwin had hinted the show’s days were numbered last week... Fox News reports.

“‘How are you feeling about next season being the last season of '30 Rock?' one fan had tweeted to Baldwin, 54, last week. ‘The time is nigh,’ Baldwin responded in a tweet.”

Then on Sunday, E! Online was reporting that NBC Boss Robert Greenblatt...

“...denied that any decisions had been made about whether or not this would be the Alec Baldwin starrer's final season. ‘As they age, it's obviously something you look at. We haven't definitely said that with any of them yet,’ he said, addressing the fates of both 30 Rock and Community.”

The show will have 13 more episodes with an hour-long finale. And with the latest ratings, this end doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

The Hollywood Reporter notes,

“Despite awards-season recognition, the Thursday night comedy ... has seen its ratings erode, like most broadcast fare, despite high-profile guest stars and a second live episode, which notched a 1.6 in the demo -- a far cry from the 3.1 mark for its 2010 live installment."

So what’s on tap for the perpetually lagging NBC programming this fall? A lot of funny business.

Access Hollywood reports Matthew Perry — aka Chandler Bing from Friends — will star in a new comedy called “Go On.” Here’s WFLA.

“Go on, starring Matthew Perry. He plays a wise cracking sportscaster coping with loss.”

Access Hollywod says Greenblatt - the NBC entertainment president - says...

“NBC is finding a new generation of fans discovering Perry’s Chandler character through “Friends” reruns, and that contributed to “Go On” having broad appeal in audience testing.”

But if you want your dose of Tina Fey - post 30 Rock, there’s still hope. The New York Times reports Greenblatt...

“… added a pitch of sorts to Ms. Fey, a respected writer and producer as well as actress, to bring future projects to the network. ‘We think the world of Tina and hope she will be in the NBC family for years to come,’ he said.”

Other NBC shows that have been renewed are “Smash,” “The Voice,” “Community,” “The Office” and “Parks and Rec.”

18 year-old singer/songwriter Noah Guthrie issexy sexy, and quite frankly, 2.5 million YouTube fans “know it.” Guthrie’s cover of LMFAO’s hit song “Sexy and I Know It” became an overnight YouTube sensation, catapulting the musician to instant Internet stardom. Take a listen...

The soulful cover went viral a few days after Guthrie posted the video on May 9 and the Internet has stopped to stare.

Glamour writer Lauren Brown praises Guthrie’s “... voice, his creativity and willingness to go for it … That's the beauty of live music--there are so many ways to hear the same song yet take away different messages and emotions from each performer.”

Guthrie currently has 53 videos uploaded to his YouTube channel.

The artist has covered popular singles by Selena Gomez, Foster the People and even Adele.

The Huffington Post raves about the viral video, commending his musical talent and daring adaptation.

Dare we say it -- the cover just might be better than the original.”

MSNBC writer Randee Dawn notes, YouTube captures 2 days worth of video -- every minute.

t’s something when one breaks through like this.

“Guthrie is not quite just a basement rocker; he's self-taught on the acoustic and as a singer (his voice is raspy and bluesy, reminiscent of John Mayer and John Popper) and he's been making a name for himself around his hometown by playing small shows, and even has a management contract.”

On the Today Show today, Guthrie expressed his humble gratitude for the recognition his cover has received thus far.

“The next morning after I posted it, I woke up and it had like 200,000 views on it. I pretty much lost my mind.”

“I’m very blessed with my situation, and everything.”

When asked about his future, the self-taught star stated he hopes to release an original album in the future, but will continue producing the weekly acoustic covers that made him famous. But one thing is clear-- Guthrie’s vocals simply “work out”.

BY ALLYSON BROWN

ANCHOR CHRISTIAN BRYANT

You’ve probably heard about Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest satire “The Dictator.”
While it is along the same lines as his other caricature-type movies, some think his newest one may have went too far.
IMDb has the plot.

“The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.”

So who is the target of Cohen’s latest mock-epic?
Everybody — he holds no punches and pays particular attention to America.
The BBC interviewed castmate Sir Ben Kingsley.

“It’s shining a really merciless light on the bigotry and prejudice that’s totally infested this dicator.”

But a writer for CNN says the bigotry and prejudice Cohen’s character portrays is a modern-day minstrel of “brown” people.

“If you are going to mock and ridicule us for profit, can you at least cast Arabs and Indians to play us? …. why not include us in the creative process ... It would help the film rise above the superficial and cliched material we have seen for years … “

A movie reviewer for Blip says now that he’s on the end of those jokes, it’s not a laughing matter.

“It’s interesting, in watching this movie,I had a very similar feeling as when I had with Borat. I always wondered how the people in Kazakhstan felt about Cohen’s depiction of them and now I understand because I am on the opposite end.”

A writer for the Washington Times says Cohen’s always been like this and it shouldn’t be a surprise

“‘The Dictator’ is a step down for Mr. Cohen. Yes, it’s intermittently funny, but unlike the transgressive offenses of ‘Borat,’ it’s hardly revolutionary.

A blogger for WhatCulture says he has also some uneasiness about the jokes.

“I wholly understand that one of the finest ways to satirise offensive, bigoted behaviour is to hold a mirror up to it …. somewhere along the way, in between making dick jokes and dictator jokes, Baron Cohen appears to have forgotten about the finesse required,”

Finesse?
From Cohen?
That’s a long shot ...‘The Dictator’ is set to make its American debut next Wednesday on May 16.

A new Jimi Hendrix biopic is in the works and it seems the filmmakers have found their lead man — and he’s an “Outkast.” Seattle’s KOMO reports.

“Rap artist and actor Andre 3000, seen here in the red hat, is set to star in the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic ‘All is By My Side.’”

Andre 3000, or Andre Benjamin, the lead rapper for Outkast, is scheduled to begin the movie in three weeks. But production is already stuck in a purple haze. The project hit a snag earlier this week when the Hendrix Estate refused to endorse the film. So what does this all mean? Stereotude breaks it down.

"[The Estate] has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”

So why the holdout? MovieFone is reporting the estate is concerned with any film that could potentially tarnish the late singer’s name.

“Since the day Jimi died his estate has been complicated, with three or four different owners over the years, multiple lawsuits, and millions spent fighting for his legacy. It is one of the messiest stories in music industry history.”

Because the film will not be able to use Hendrix’s music, the film will concentrate on Hendrix’s early life. Deadline Hollywood details the possible plot.

“[I]t will detail Hendrix growing up in Seattle, joining the Army, playing in back-up bands throughout the South and with the Isley Brothers and Little Richard among others.”

A columnist for The Film Stage is raving about the possibility Andre 3000 portraying the late guitarist saying he’s

“...not just a spot-on lookalike, but a brilliant musician and promising actor.”

But a writer for IndieWire says Andre is too recognizable, and the part should go to a more unknown actor.

“With faces we're already familiar with, that familiarity can be distracting...”

Andre 3000 has previously acted in the TV show “The Shield” and in the film, “Idlewild.”

BY JIM FLINK

It was dubbed “Starmaggedon.”

George Clooney’s $15 million fundraiser for President Obama shattered the president’s personal fundraising record for a one-night affair.

The Wall Street Journal notes, it culminates a week when the president made a paradigm shift in his support of gay marriage.

“I’m sure it will win him some points in Hollywood circles that are traditionally supportive of gay marriage.”

This is the kind of deep-pocketed Hollywood crowd analysts say Mr. Obama needs to fund his campaign coffers. The National Post notes, guests included Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, Salma Hayek and Barbra Streisand.

“About 150 well-heeled guests paid … $40,000 a ticket to get into the exclusive soirée, the latest in a string of big-money events...”

So what did the select group of guests get for their price of admission?
A few jokes, and a serious warning from the president that he faces a steep uphill climb in his re-election hopes. The Wrap quotes the president from the party rostrum...

“2008 in some ways was lightning in a bottle … That passion that we brought to bear in 2008 is going to have to express itself maybe not in such flashy form, it's going to have to be steady, but we're going to have to keep those fires burning all the way through November and beyond.”

Critics were quick to point out, this week has been full of big-dollar fundraisers for Mr. Obama.

And there’s been a theme emerging... around another presidential pronouncement this week. The one supporting same-sex marriages.

“On Monday, the president is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser in New York sponsored by gay and Latino supporters. On June 6, he heads back to Los Angeles for a LGBT gala, which organizers say quickly exceeded its 700-person limit after the president’s announcement.”

Fox News calls Mr. Obama’s West Coast trip a victory lap in his gay rights announcement.

“By the time he got to George Clooney’s house for the main event, he’d already stopped in Seattle, where voters will weigh in on gay marriage later this year.”

The Atlantic Wire says, if you think any of this week’s Obama strategies were by coincidence, from the Biden announcement Sunday to the Clooney bash Thursday, you’re mistaken.

“Obama's recipe for reelection is melding motivated constituencies. ... This is micro-targeting and constituent corralling.”

“... inspired by a recent biography that suggested Keller had a love affair in her 30s, became secretly engaged and tried to elope with the man she loved.”

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says adding another layer to Keller’s well documented and celebrated life won’t sit well with everyone.

“The book will surely prompt controversy. Some reviews criticize the book for placing a stain on Helen Keller's reputation. How difficult to take a slice of a high-profile person's life and turn it into a novel.”

After writing the book, Sultan blogged for Huffington Post stating what she believes is Keller’s real untold story.

“...‘her triumph over multiple disabilities and her enormous celebrity had trapped her within a constricting saintliness and an image of purity. Though she could speak up about equality...she was not granted the rights she sought for others.’”

The novel is Sultan’s first and was published on April 26th.

‘The Avengers’ took the top spot on its opening weekend...and well, the top spot ever. Disney’s first Marvel release broke —no demolished --- the record for most money ever made on opening weekend. Here’s Good Morning America with the final number.

“The Avengers had, by far, the biggest opening of any movie ever taking more than 200 million at the box office in its debut weekend, That’s 30 million more than the Harry Potter finale.”

That’s 200.3 million to be exact. So what made Iron Man, Thor and company a bigger hit than Harry Potter, Twilight, or anything James Cameron ever made? CNN says it’s all in the marketing.

“In all the movies leading up to this, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, they said ‘We’re gonna do the Avengers, come and see the Avengers.’ They had little clips at the end promo’ing this movie. So finally when it came out, people were so hungry to see it.”

Even taking into account inflation, the Chicago Sun-Times points out Marvel still tops previous superhero record holders.

“Based on average admission prices the years they were released, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Spider-Man 3’ had led with about 22 million tickets sold each over opening weekend. Today’s average prices put “The Avengers” tally at around 25.6 million tickets sold.”

Bloomberg says all the hype paid off – and gave Disney a “W” it badly needed.

“Disney bore the risks of its bet-big strategy with the March release ‘John Carter,’ which cost $250 million, according to Box Office Mojo, and failed to resonate with audiences.”

But the success of “The Avengers” could prove Disney made the right move in picking up Marvel.

CNN reports the movie grossed more than $640 million in 12 days of screening worldwide. And box office expert Jeff Bock tells MTV.com - other superheroes should take notice.

"This was Marvel's master plan from the beginning and it turned into a master class. If DC can eventually get all their universe straightened out, there is no reason a Justice League movie couldn't blow up the box office like Marvel's 'Avengers' did."

BY DAVID EARL

Your channel lineup is about to get a little more crowded … and if you’re tired of the traditional options for cable news … you might like this announcement on from ABC News.

“ABC News is about to join forces with Univision -- that is the number one Hispanic media company -- we’re gonna launch a 24 hour news, information, and lifestyle network that’s targeted right at America’s Hispanic community.”

Media reporters have speculated the new network will be based in Miami — with reporters stationed all across the country. Plans are to have it up and running in 2013. The Huffington Post says the two media companies plan to offer ...

“‘... uncompromising coverage of current events with a unique perspective’ with the around-the-clock, English-language television network and digital platform … The television network will be staffed by journalists from ABC News and Univision News.”

And the New York Times points out — the demo ABC and Univision are going after is a lucrative one.

“Media companies like Disney are eager to provide advertisers new ways to reach Hispanics, whose numbers are swelling according to census estimates. A recent report by Nielsen projected that the buying power of Hispanics in the United States, estimated at $1 trillion in 2010, will grow to $1.5 trillion in 2015.”

But it’s not easy getting cable ops to put you in the lineup. The Wall Street Journal says that’s where Disney can shine in this relationship.

“Disney having ESPN … that gives them heft in negotiations with cable operators, so that’s a way that it’s ensured that the channel will get taken up.”

And if you think it’ll just end up looking like a carbon copy of all the other cable news outlets, MediaBistro has words from the head of ABC News.

“Don’t expect the network to look anything like existing cable news channels, CNN, Fox News or MSNBC. ‘This is not an ideological venture,’ ABC News president Ben Sherwood tells us. ‘The vision here is a full-service operation providing culturally relevant programming in English.’”

Right now, the new network is still unnamed.

Now he’s the king....of soda pop. Michael Jackson’s estate has entered into an agreement with Pepsi. WFOR in Miami reports the late singer’s silhouette will be prominently featured on new Pepsi Cola cans.

“It will appear and some of his iconic dance moves for the promotion which also coincides with the 25th anniversary of his Bad album. The limited edition cans will go on sale in China tomorrow and later in the U.S. next month.”

This won’t be the first time Jackson is face of Pepsi. Back in the 1980s, Jackson starred in several Pepsi commercials. Here’s a clip from the Wall Street Journal.

“You are the Pepsi generation!”

TMZ says the relationship between the Jackson and the company soured when the singer was badly burned in a 1984 incident when a Pepsi can exploded and caught his hair on fire.

A TMZ columnist says the incident left Jackson burned and some argue it led to Jackson’s addiction to painkillers and eventually his death.

Some critics are saying the partnership is inappropriate. One reason? The history of the Jackson/Pepsi partnership, according to a writer for the Week, is just “too creepy.”

“The prescription drug habit eventually led Jackson to Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of manslaughter in the King of Pop's death. Why is Jackson's estate getting back in bed with Pepsi?”

Other critics argue, it’s just too soon. A columnist for iVillage says though it’s not uncommon to use the images of legends passed on to sell goods, Jackson is a much different story.

“There was that Dirt Devil commercial starring Fred Astaire, and that Gap ad using footage of Audrey Hepburn. But those celebrities experienced their heyday more than 50 years ago, and died after long, fulfilling lives. Jackson died three years ago, and fans are still mourning his early passing.”

Proponents say Jackson could boost Pepsi sales. A writer for Forbes says this partnership will work because of the King of Pop’s marketability, especially in foreign countries.

“More obvious, though, is the fact that PepsiCo is trying to capture markets outside the United States. It has invested heavily in Asian beverage companies in recent years. Jackson is the perfect vehicle to support these investments.”

Pepsi announced they expect to produce around one billion cans with the Jackson likeness on it.

The host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” will soon have something in common with his contestants.
Chris Harrison and his wife announced they are splitting after 18 years of marriage. They told People in a joint statement

“Though we have made this incredibly difficult decision to separate, our love and mutual respect remain, and we look forward to sharing in the lives of our wonderful children.”

PR spin or real scoop? An insider tells In Touch...

“...[they] have been broken up for a while, and most of their close friends know. ‘They are still really close and remain the best of friends,’”

According to Pop Blend, we might never know the juicy tidbits because of Harrison’s status or lack thereof.

“Were he any more famous, it would be likely we’d hear lurid details of what specifically went wrong in the coming weeks, but since he’s only moderately well-known, it’s likely the tabloids will let these two keep some sense of privacy.”

A Huffington Post blogger says this saddens her, but she thinks it could help Harrison on the show in the long run.

“Maybe Harrison's divorce makes him better equipped to counsel ‘Bachelor’ contestants. After all, the couples that the show produces typically end up needing a post-split shoulder to cry on -- not marriage advice.”

Examiner.com polled the public — reactions vary, but some are blaming the soon-to-be bachelor.

“Some people accused Chris of having ‘too many women around him who were single’ and saying ‘I'm sure he caved in.’”

Back in 2010, a former contestant accused Harrison of inappropriate behavior for a married man. A writer for USA Today says

“Booted Bachelor contestant Rozlyn Papa accused Harrison of making a pass at the wife of the producer she was said to be dating? It was very uncomfortable for Harrison, who, at the time, said, ‘I won't even dignify that with a response’”

The new season of “The Bachelor” premieres May 14.

Multiple outlets broke the news Friday that a pop legend has died - rapper “MCA” from the Beastie Boys. Here’s HLN...

“MCA’s real name by the way, Adam Yauch. He was diagnosed with cancer back in 2009. Had undergone surgery, radiation treatment, really fought hard."

Rolling Stone reports that MCA was 47 and had cancer of the salivary gland which is very rare. The Beastie Boys identified some of MCAs accomplishments. They wrote:

"... musician, rapper, activist and director Adam 'MCA' Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories."

CNN talked a little bit about how the Beastie Boys had great crossover appeal.

“You know, you heard the rock influence definitely in their music, they started out thinking they wanted to be a punk rock band, but they were one of the first fusion type of bands. They blended the two and blended them so well.”

Detroit News says MCA founded the Beastie Boys in New York City in 1979, and it wasn’t until 1986 till they hit the big time with their release of “Licensed to III”.

"Licensed to Ill" married hard rock guitars with party-friendly rhymes, and songs like "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)," "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and "Paul Revere"... The album was the first rap album to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 albums.”

The Beastie Boys were recently inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but because of his cancer, MCA was not able to make the induction. It sounds like we may hear from MCA during the ceremony that will air on HBO Sunday. Here’s an exclusive preview from Huffington Post.

“Adam Yauch, MCA, wrote this speech and it was in his house - FLASH - where I remember I would go every day after school and we’d make a damn God awful racket. And I can’t believe they let us do it.”

We’ll get a chance to hear more of what MCA had to say when the broadcast version of the 27th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony airs Saturday May 5th on HBO. LL Cool J weighs in on his excitement for the Beastie Boys.

“It’s pretty surreal to watch guys you grow up with and started out with to see them make this kind of leap to that next echelon.”

Billboard gives some insight on what will be in MCA’s Hall of Fame acceptance speech letter.

“...Yauch thanked the group's fans for being so integral to their legendary -- and over the past three years, trying -- past. "This induction is as much ours as it us yours," wrote MCA.”

Viral viciousness is taking over YouTube after the release of video taken from the Portland Zoo.

Maybe you’ve seen it. If not — here it is, as the video poster— writes of the lion —
“Kya, tries desperately to eat my son through the glass. Jack is coincidentally dressed like a baby zebra in his black and white striped hoodie. He is brave though and calls her ‘kitty kitty’. That's my boy.”

And indeed, the video has blown up on YouTube. 1.3 million views. Kotaka has a common refrain.

“Hey baby. Hey, baby! Look behind you. Yes, behind you. Yes, that's a lion. Yes, she wants to eat you. She probably thinks you're a zebra.... But baby's response? Chill as an ocean breeze.”

Of course there are lots of people who are all but chill about this video.
Like BaristaNet...

“The video is short and sweet but also disturbing – not because the lioness at the Oregon Zoo literally attempts to bite the head off the little baby...but because the the family filming the home video is unfazed and actually laughing while the lioness claws at the glass trying to devour their child.”

And then the discussion turned serious-ish. Gather writing...

“Dress your baby up like a little zebra, place him in front of a lioness, and see what happens. Here's your answer: The lion tries to eat the small child...Later on in this child's life, however, when he finds this clip of a lioness trying to bite his head off, he might be asking his parents what in the world they were thinking.”

The vitriol escalates from there in some cases. Like in the comments section below the video.

“OH that's good, lets just get the lion all riled up so that if it does get out, the first thing it does is eat a baby! I think we should tie the parents to that lions food dish instead. Gene pool purfication.”

To which....Dolly Mix says — really?

“Oh please. There have also been suggestions that the parents were taunting Kya a little - bringing their lion-baiting tot back to pose for further filming after the first session proved such a hit. Whatever next...concerned citizens with 'think of the children!' placards picketing zoos in case the couple behind this stunt start a dangerous trend?”

There are actually two versions of the video — shot from different angles.
We’ve linked to them in our transcript section.

<![CDATA[Ashton Kutcher Popchip Ad Pulled Offline For Being Racist]]> Thu, 03 May 2012 19:38:05 -0500

ANCHOR LAUREN GORES

Unfortunately he is not being punked.

Ashton Kutcher’s most recent online ad was pulled just about 24 hours after being put up.

It featured the actor playing an Indian character in brown makeup and an accent.

News12 has more.

“Some viewers called the Popchips dating parody commercial racist. A spokesperson for Popchips says it was ‘created to provide a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone.’”

Popchips pulled the ad off of its YouTube channel — but MTV posted it on theirs.

So is the ad racist or not? Here is the commercial for you to decide for yourself.

“I’m Raj, I am a Bollywood producer. I am looking for the most delicious thing on this planet. I’m Nigel and I am seeking higher planes of consciousness. Higher planes of consciousness.”

Blogger Anil Dash was initially outraged by the ad — on his blog calling for the company NOT to pull the video, but instead leave it up and link to it an explanation of quote “how their process failed.”

“‘I think the people behind this Popchips ad are not racist. I think they just made a racist ad, because they're so steeped in our culture's racism that they didn't even realize they were doing it.’”

In an update though — Dash said he’d spoken with a Popchips’ founder — and felt he was sincere in his apology. And The Hollywood Reporter paraphrases a Popchips spokesperson — who said Thursday the ad was not meant to offend anyone.

“The advertisement -- one of four spots that features Kutcher as different characters, each in a dating video -- should be enjoyed with good humor. The rep for popchips also noted that the ads are not running on television...”

NBC discussed the controversial topic with a few guests.

Panelist Donny Deutsch says people have a right to be offended by the ad, but on the other side people need to loosen up.

“ ...but we get to a point where when do we let all of this other stuff go and almost the un-racist thing is to kinda just say we can all make fun of each other and that's when the walls come down.”

Ultimately the ad was pulled — but The View’s Whoopi Goldberg says she doesn’t believe the ad was ill-intentioned — at least on Kutcher's part.

“listen I don't think he had any bad intentions, I don’t think there was anything bad, ...people feel the way they feel and they pulled it off and maybe they will do it differently.”

More than a million views and counting. One of the latest viral videos to hit YouTube is a tear-jerker.
It’s a dog, welcoming home his soldier owner.
The FW, sets the stage...

“Ranger, a German Shepherd, is playing fetch out in the lawn with his favorite toy. But when his toy is flung far out, Ranger runs to fetch it but comes back to find a familiar face back home. The reaction Ranger has to his returning master sounds to us like he surely missed the man.”

You wanna see it for yourself, don’t ya? Here’s a clip, from YouTube.

The original poster of the video — Welcome Home Blog — specializes in soldier homecomings.
Usually, they feature families welcoming home their soldiers -- children, wives, etc. But pets — the site says — are definitely in that equation.

“The excited barks are enough to let you know that this is one happy little dog!”

While some will say, people put too many human emotions into animals — this one has lots of people doing just that. Like one viewer of the video posted on KITV, who imagines what the dog is saying.

"Why didn't you tell me? How could you keep this from me? Absolutely adorable.”

And a blogger for Evansville’s WJLT radio says, she just can’t get enough of these kinds of videos.

“I don’t care if you’re a dog person or not, stories like these melt everyone’s heart. Dogs have boundless love for us and when we’re away for even 5 minutes it seems like forever to them. Can you imagine how much they would miss you if you were away for more than a year?”

The video actually goes on for more than a minute. If you want to see it in its entirety, we have a link in our transcript section.

Well, Jessica Simpson is finally un-pregnant — she gave birth to a nine-pound, 13-ounce baby girl in Los Angeles Tuesday. It’s the singer and reality-TV personality’s first child with fiancé Eric Johnson, a former NFL player.

Simpson has been very vocal about her pregnancy. She told Jimmy Kimmel on his show she had so much amniotic fluid that she’d be like a fire hydrant when her water broke. ABC News says all Simpson’s tweeting and talking isn’t going to stop now that Maxwell is finally here.

The couple named their child Maxwell Drew Johnson. Yes, Maxwell and yes, the baby is a girl.

Simpson was quoted saying her baby’s name wasn’t shocking. But CNN reports — it’s getting a lot of attention.

“Does she, like CNN Showbiz, have an everlasting adoration for the R&B singer of the same name? Did she and Eric have Maxwell House coffee after conceiving? Whatever the reason, the new mom elected not to explain in the birth announcement she put out on the Web.”

So what’s next for this new mom? Her fashion lines raked in $1 billion in 2011, according to E! Online. But will Simpson get more cash for her new baby girl? E! Online says probably not.

It says the days of raking in the big bucks for baby pictures are over. Simpson tried to sell confirmation of her pregnancy and her first baby photos for $750,000 but didn’t get any takers.

But US Weekly photo editor Peter Grossman tells TIME — he disagrees.

“Being a celebrity mom has more business opportunities than ever before…Now, it’s not just about selling your baby pics. It’s starting a clothing line or endorsing a stroller. The value of a celebrity mom has never been higher.”

Simpson has already cashed in on a newly inked $3 million deal with Weight Watchers. A contributor for NBC’s “Today” says there’s no time for this mommy to put her feet up and enjoy maternity leave — it’s time to hit the gym.

“While it seems cruel and unusual to burden a new mother with the additional pressure of losing her baby weight so publicly, we look forward to seeing Jess handle it with her usual charmingly Southern aplomb: "No more fried Twinkies, y'all! My Daisy Dukes are waiting!"

Simpson and Johnson had initially planned to get married before Simpson’s due date but decided to postpone the wedding until after Simpson had the baby.

An infamous mother of 14 — has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. And in order to make ends meet — New York’s News 12 reports — she’s willing to do just about anything.

“Octomom, Nadya Suleman says she will do porn if it meant providing for her 14 children. Suleman admits her home is in foreclosure and she and her children will have to move.”

Octomom owes somewhere between $500,000 to $1 million dollars to companies, businesses, and a hospital. According to The Wall Street Journal, Octomom is barely worth a tenth of that.

“Her net worth? Less than $50,000, according to court papers. Suleman, 36, didn’t detail her financial hardship in the first documents that were filed in her Chapter 7 case ...”

Octomom says filing for chapter 7 was one of the hardest things she has ever done. According to a statement obtained by Yahoo! she says ...

"But I have to do what is best for my children and I need a fresh start."

A fresh start that leads her into the movie industry … let me clarify ... the adult movie industry. Porn makers have been knocking on her door for years ...

Octomom has gone on the record stating she would never do porn but she recently told CNN that if the right offer came along...

“If it’s a job, a well paying job and its gonna allow me to get us out of here into a very safe huge home that they deserve, I’m going to do it!”

Some media bloggers say they would support her if she went down that route … Pop Blend says they will support her as long as it doesn’t go past a certain amount ….

“ … wishes Octomom nothing but the best as she sorts out her legal troubles. If she does make a porn film, we’ll even buy a copy out of the goodness of our heart, at least if it doesn’t cost more than twenty dollars.”

A blogger for Salon is not laughing about her possible career move and says the media is not helping either.

“ ... a culture that would punish a woman for that recklessness by taking pleasure in her humiliation, that would send her the clear and repeated message that her value now is simply as a sex show freak, is just sadistic.”

At this time she has an offer for $100,000 to do three scenes, that’s a paltry amount compared to the $1 million she was offered in 2009.

They don’t get much cooler than everyone’s favorite Golden Girl, Betty White—and now it looks like she’s lending her fame, and voice, to California’s heated congressional election. CNN has more.

“90-year old Betty White made her pick in California's 28th congressional district. White appeared in an ad alongside her co-star for longtime Congressman Howard Berman.”

Seeking his 16th term as a U.S. Representative, Berman is up against Democratic colleague Brad Sherman in a newly drawn district based in San Fernando Valley. White explains why she thinks Berman is the better choice.

Betty White: “Re-elect Congressman Howard Berman. The Valley leader who fights for the humane treatment of all animals...and he has very nice blue eyes!”

Howard Berman: “I’m Howard Berman and my friend and I approve this message.”

So why the focus on animals in the ad? KTVU explains.

“In addition to being known for challenging the stereotypes regarding acceptable behavior of 90 year olds... Betty White has been a long time supporter of animal rights.”

The campaign ad is one of many cable TV spots Berman is spending $1 million to air ahead of the June 5th all-party primary. A blogger for The Hill says his celebrity endorsements aren’t all that surprising— after all — he used to represent Hollywood.

“While the new district doesn't include Hollywood he's relied heavily on his old constituents for support — his largest fundraiser was a star-studded event hosted by Steven Spielberg.”

So could the former Golden Girl give Berman the edge? A writer for About.com says — oh yeah. According to a Reuters survey — White was one of the most trusted public figures in 2011.

“Americans asked about public figures gave Betty White an 86 percent favorable rating, with 44 percent saying they'd be more likely to buy a product or do business with a company she endorsed. Those are amazing numbers.”

Mr Palmer, whose fortune is estimated at between 3 and 6 billion dollars, is paying for the replica out of his own pocket — something he doesn’t mind bringing up. The BBC has his statement.

Clive Palmer: "We've got the money, we've got the shipyard and we're moving very heavily to commence construction to bring this ship into service."

As a blogger for The Wall Street Journal writes, as a well known eccentric industrialist, Palmer isn’t one to stay out of the spotlight — but this is definitely an eye opening affair.

“...his desire to see his version of Titanic sail past the Statue of Liberty alongside a Chinese naval escort could raise a few eyebrows in the U.S. where Mr. Palmer has previously accused the Central Intelligence Agency of funding clandestine campaigns in Australia.”

In a separate press conference on the same day he announced his Titanic plans — Palmer also announced his bid for parliament — which has prompted many in the media to question his judgement. A writer for The Punch wasn’t too impressed at this perceived publicity stunt.

“It says a lot about the current climate that a mining magnate can simultaneously announce he’s commissioned a replica of the Titanic and that he’s going to run against the Treasurer at the next election and it seems like just another day in the circus that is Australian politics.”

A writer for Crikey takes it one step farther, saying it plays into the farce of politics in Australia — and it is only getting worse.

“This is what happens when politicians and the media debase the truth in favour of endless spin...voters get the message: if politicians and the media don’t take politics seriously enough...why should they...? Why not treat it simply as game of egos and tall tales without real significance?”

Palmer says the voyage is set for 2016 and will sail from London to New York.

You're watching multisource global video news analysis from Newsy.

Cinema titan Peter Jackson is defending new film technology after fans and critics responded negatively to the first HD reveal of his upcoming film ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ earlier this week.

Viewers of the film’s 10-minute preview at CinemaCon bashed Jackson for shooting the film at 48 frames per second, which is twice the normal shooting rate for film.

http://blogs.forbes.com/anthonykosner/

But Jackson stands by his technique, saying people need to watch the entire film before they knock the frame rate. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he explains,

“‘This technology is going to keep evolving … There can only ever be a real reaction, a truthful reaction, when people actually have a chance to see a complete narrative on a particular film.’”

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/04/27/peter-jackson-responds-hobbit/

Jackson says shooting at 48 frames per second gives viewers a more realistic experience at the theaters. But some people believe this technique could actually damage the moviegoing experience. A writer for Forbes explains,

“From his point of view, the technology is changing, and us plebs have just got to get used to it. He’s wrong … The magic of a movie lies in its separation from real life – try to bring it closer, and it just falls farther away.”

http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2012/04/28/peter-jackson-is-wrong-about-the-hobbit-and-48fps/

A writer for First Showing says Jackson’s idea to give audiences a 10 minute tease might be the real reason for the negative reactions.

“...if he really wanted to have the audience get "into the dialogue, the characters and the story" and forget about the 48FPS, they should've shown closer to 30 minutes...rather than just 10 minutes. Haven't they been shooting for almost a year already? They should have enough to work with.”

http://www.firstshowing.net/2012/peter-jackson-responds-to-early-48fps-hobbit-footage-complaints/

Still, some fans are ready to be wowed by Jackson again. A blogger for Indie Wire says,

“...the naysaying is reminiscent of the early days of James Cameron's "Avatar" that many thought was a risk that wouldn't pay off...you can bet the director and New Line are going to pull out all the stops to get the geeks and everyone else back on board, and excited to get back to Middle Earth.”

The Huffington Post says ‘The Hobbit’ will be released in December in 3-D and 2-D. Despite these recent complaints, producers have already decided to show the film at both 24 and 48 frames per second.

Covering for a sick co-worker in the office can be difficult. But what if your under-the-weather colleague is the host of American Idol? Ryan Seacrest - clearly ill - didn’t take any chances and toughed out Wednesday’s show. But TMZ said, it came at a price.

TMZ reports Seacrest had a horrible stomach bug and he spent Tuesday night and Wednesday throwing up. He braved the stage but between the hugs and the handshakes, TMZ says Seacrest probably infected everyone sharing the spotlight with him.

Seacrest was so sick he was hooked up to IV fluids before hosting the two-hour long show. But Examiner points out, this guy takes his contractual duties very seriously – he hasn’t missed a show in eleven years.

E! Online said show producer Nigel Lythgoe was a possible replacement for Seacrest if he had called in sick. A contributor for Today.com said the biggest story of the night wasn’t the six finalists but instead, that Seacrest managed to stay upright the entire show. Though he stood his ground, the writer said…

“All the time in the world with the makeup folks couldn’t keep him from looking like death warmed over…His usual dapper look also took a hit in the form of a missing tie and a rumpled-looking dress shirt that wasn't even buttoned all the way up.”

And The Washington Post pointed out Seacrest didn’t make his usual, dizzying descent down the staircase. Instead, he just greeted the judges at the desk – and it says that way Seacrest had something to lean on, faint on or puke on. The weak Seacrest also spent most of his segments on stools.

And Zap2It reports backstage, managers had ice packs to keep his temperature down and fanned him with their notebooks. Skylar Laine told Zap 2 It she dedicated her Queen performance, “The Show Must Go On,” to the under-the-weather host.

"Ryan is a trooper, I'm serious. He was sick and he just gets on that stage and he does what he does best and he makes the show great."

But, Seacrest fans can rest assured. He tweeted after the show, “Feeling better now. Thx throat coat.”

MTV launched its “Fantasy Election Game” Tuesday with hopes of boosting the 2012 youth vote. The online game is part of MTV’s “Power of 12” campaign which aims to encourage young people to follow the elections. MTV’s Andrew Jenks explains.

“Every step of the way I’ll be making sure that they’re hearing our concerns, all 45 million of us. It’s our country, it’s our future, it’s our voice. It’s the power of 12.”

The game will reward players who get involved in Election 2012 with real prizes, including tickets to the MTV Music Awards. Bonus points will be allocated to those who “check in” at election events and polling stations on FourSquare and GetGlue. The Futon Critic quotes the CEO of Knight Foundation - the main funder of the game...

“It's a fantasy game but the stakes couldn't be higher. If a fun format, competitive prizes, and credible information give young people the habit of engagement in civic life, it will be a big win."

But not everyone thinks the “gamification” of politics is a good idea. Marc Andreessen, founder of Mosaic internet browser says “software will eat the world”. According to a Forbes article…

“One of the ways that this is playing out is in the social media-izing of everything, from friendship to shopping, activism to politics.”

But according to “Game Politics,” MTV’s efforts to involve youth in politics have come at a cost. Their youth campaigns have faced criticism in the past from conservative and conservative-leaning groups, with many claiming that MTV is in favor of the Democrats.

The online game is available for registration.

BY ALLYSON BROWN

Deion Sanders is back in the spotlight, but not for his football or TV career. He’s back because he is the alleged victim of a domestic dispute.

"Monday evening the former defensive back tweeted: “Pray for me and my kids now! They just witnessed their mother and a friend jump me in my room. She's going to jail n I'm pressing charges!”

And pressed charges he did.

"Apparently, Sanders warned authorities beforehand an incident would take place. Sanders says his wife kicked, bit and scratched him. Pilar Michelle Sanders was booked late Monday night."

Pilar’s bond was only $264 ... but her estranged husband told KXAS he’s taken extra precautions.

“I have locks on my doors right now. Is somebody going to have to die … is it going to be me before the courts do something to get this woman out my house, it’s absurd.”

This after Deion filed for divorce back in December 2011 and Pilar filed a still-pending defamation lawsuit against him. A Yahoo! contributor applauds Deion for how he handled the situation.

“I comment Sanders for coming forward first. At least this way, he can control the story and try to keep his family from getting hounded by more unnecessary media coverage.”

So how can Deion prove all this occurred? He says he has two character witnesses — his sons. He also tweeted this photo, saying...

“Filling out police reports now! Thank God for this platform to issue the Truth.”

Pilar hasn’t publicly responded as of Tuesday afternoon.

More than three years after the slaying of Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and seven year old nephew, the murder trial of her former brother-in-law, William Balfour, began in Chicago Monday. The actress and singer was the first witness to take the stand.

“An emotional Hudson said today that her family didn’t like how Balfour treated her sister.”

While Hudson has commented very little on the murders, CNN reported she has broken down before when talking about the ordeal. In a VH1 special, Hudson recalls being asked to do a film after the tragedy.

“I was like...I have to get adjusted to who I am now. I can’t be another character...if I don’t know who I am.”

The notoriety of the trial has some concerned it won’t be handled properly. The Chicago Sun Times quotes Chicago Assistant Public Defender Amy Thompson as saying...

“...because of Jennifer Hudson’s celebrity status, investigators jumped the gun and solely focused on Balfour as the media pressure intensified.”

Others agree Hudson’s fame has and will continue to have a large impact on the proceedings. The Orlando Sentinel reports — Hudson’s testimony is really just an appeal to jurors, as the singer has no inside knowledge of what really occurred.

“...when the celebrity aspect of the trial is stripped away, what is left is a largely circumstantial case that lacks a confession, an eyewitness to the slayings or the ability to directly link Balfour to the murder weapon.”

Hudson stated she plans to attend every day of Balfour’s trial.

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb woke up from a coma against all odds this weekend, after he came down with pneumonia last week. HLN shares one possible explanation for the 62-year-old’s sudden recovery:

“On Friday, there were reports that Gibb’s wife and children sang to him to get him to come out of his coma.”

HLN also reports Gibb cried after his wife played the song “Crying” by Roy Orbison in his hospital room. Gibb has been fighting colorectal cancer that led to complications. E! News reports:

“Gibb not only had pneumonia, but he also had brain swelling from liver failure and a weakened immune system from malnutrition. The situation appeared to be so dire that just days ago, the physician told Gibb's family he was fearful the music legend would not recover.”

Media outlets report his cancer was in remission last month before this latest scare. The Daily Mail reports:

“Gibb had been able to nod and communicate with his family members... When he finally woke up from [the] 12-day coma, Robin Gibb looked at his son and uttered a heart wrenching: 'Hello RJ'.”

Gibb’s doctor said in a statement his immediate goals are for Gibb to eat, drink and breathe on his own. The BBC adds:

“Once that happened, he may be able to be moved from the intensive care unit to the ward to begin the process of nutritional and physical rehabilitation.”

The Daily Mail reports Gibb’s bandmate and brother, Barry, also sang to him, and Gibbs’ family kept a bedside vigil throughout the coma.

<![CDATA[Army Base Cancels Ted Nugent Concert: Others to Follow?]]> Mon, 23 Apr 2012 05:00:05 -0500

The Army has dropped 70’s rocker Ted Nugent from a concert he was scheduled to headline at Fort Knox this summer after he made these comments at an NRA convention earlier this week.

“If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year."

A spokesperson for Fort Knox told The Blaze…

“It would be a conflict of interest since the military has the obligation to be apolitical.”

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed, drawing a wide variety of both supportive and critical comments on the official Fort Knox Facebook page.

The Hollywood Reporter says the move isn’t consistent with past performances on the base.

“At its website, for example, Fort Knox is touting an appearance this month by comedian Jay Phillips who is supportive of Obama through his Twitter activities. And Ludacris has performed at U.S. Army bases even after the 2008 release of his pro-Obama song ‘Politics As Usual,’ which calls Hillary Clinton, who was running against Obama at the time, a ‘b****’ who is ‘irrelevant.”

But a writer for the Stir argues...

“...the U.S. Army has stepped up to show him that there are repercussions when you go throwing around hate-filled rhetoric that gets perilously close to threatening our nation's president.”

Nugent’s comments also prompted two city council members in Bangor, Maine to call for the cancellation of a Nugent concert this summer in their town. Councilor Baldacci told the Bangor Daily News.

“[Nugent] has made several disturbing and violent statements against both President Obama as well as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton … I don’t think he should be allowed to perform on city property. I think it’s not an issue of free speech, it’s an issue of his threatening verbal conduct — which is not protected by the First Amendment.”

The concert promoter says he will reconsider the show if the majority of the Bangor City Council feels the same way. And CNN notes, this is just the latest in a string of bad news for Nugent who agreed to a plea deal yesterday for illegally killing an Alaska black bear in 2009.

“Nugent admitted to shooting and killing a bear using a bow and arrow during a hunt on Sukkwan Island in southeast Alaska, just days after he wounded another bear. Alaska limits licensed hunters to the bagging of one bear per hunting season. Under the law, the wounding of a bear counts toward the season's bag limit.”

The Army says it would offer a refund to anyone hoping to see Nugent take the stage at Godman Army Airfield.

A new dramatic bio-pic chronicling the coming of age of singers Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon is already generating buzz. But who could who could be headlining the cast of this new film? Variety reports one star is already being considered for the role of Joni Mitchell.

“Taylor Swift is circling the role of Joni Mitchell in Sony Pictures ... adaptation of Sheila Weller’s book ‘Girls Like Us,’ which would mark the pop star’s first turn in a big screen drama.”

Though the Grammy-winning Swift is best known for her singing prowess, she has also dabbled in acting. She had previous roles in “Valentine’s Day” and “The Lorax.” She even told MTV she was “fascinated” by acting.

“I love the idea that you can tell a story in that way. I’ve been reading scripts for about five years. In my free time, that’s all I do is read scripts.”

Reviews of the potential casting choice are mixed. One blogger says Swift could make a good Mitchell, not just because of her musical talents, but because of the uncanny resemblance.

“Obviously, there is a strong physical resemblance between a young Joni Mitchell and Taylor Swift. Both women have the same hair, coloring and there is even something about the eyes. They actually look like they could be related.”

A writer for the Playlist says Swift has the talent to make the role work, but it won’t be easy.

“Yes, she has the pipes, but does she have the acting range or the skill to embody the artist who did everything from touring with Bob Dylan to experimenting with jazz, and in many ways is exactly the opposite in every possible way from the manufactured pop and persona of Swift?”

VH1 reports “Midnight In Paris” actress Alison Pill is a front-runner for the role of Carole King. The movie, which has yet to be green-lighted, could go into production as soon as this fall.

Is it just another comic-book movie, or is Marvel’s “The Avengers” worthy of being called the best superhero flick ever?

The film assembles Marvel’s main heroes into a singular storyline — an adaptation of the comic books. It’s not even out yet, but the media are already abuzz over the certain summer blockbuster.

According to a writer for io9, the reviews have been …

“ … almost uniformly positive, if not gushing. The bottom line seems to be that this is not just the culmination of all of the Marvel movies’ buildup and anticipation … some reviewers go so far as to call it the best superhero movie yet.”

The Hollywood Reporter writes …

“As creatively variable and predictably formulaic as the Marvel films have been, this one will not only make the core geek audience feel like it’s died and gone to Asgard but has so much going for it that many nonfans will be disarmed and charmed.”

A film reviewer for The Guardian praises director Joss Whedon for managing the, quote, “meaty backstories of a half-dozen iconic heroes.”

But it’s not a completely one-sided, all-glowing review.

He goes on to say …

“ … the need for biff-bang-pow tends to prevail. The hero-against-hero slugfest that the comics have been trading on for decades is entertaining at first, but the various combinations of Hulk v Thor v Iron Man quickly blow themselves out.”

“Avengers” star Samuel L. Jackson credits the film’s director for his use of humor in an interview from HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight.”

“That’s the one thing that I think that people have gotten wrong for a very long time, and Joss understands because I think he knows this genre and he knows it so well. He created so many great comic books. … People forget the comic part of it and he didn’t.”

In contrast to the lovefest, one writer for Box Office Magazine offers up what he calls “the bad news” for viewers who haven’t seen Marvel’s previous superhero movies.

“The Avengers almost works. It's funny and it's physical, but even at two and a half hours, it plays like it's on fast-forward. Forget character development—there's not even character explanation.”

Thus far, “The Avengers” has racked up a stellar 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes

It hits U.S. theaters May 4.

The chairman of Disney’s movie division officially stepped down Friday after three rocky years on the job. He’d previously been successful running Disney’s cable operation. Here’s CNBC.

“Ross, who successfully grew the channel into a worldwide powerhouse with hit franchises like "High School Musical", failed the golden touch with cable tv to film.”

After his success with The Disney Channel, Ross was expected to turn around Walt Disney Studios. But after overseeing one of the biggest flops in film history, the sci-fi flick John Carter, Ross told his staff in a statement it was time to move on.

“... I no longer believe the chairman role is the right professional fit for me. For that reason, I have made the very difficult decision to step down...”

It was Ross’s television success that led Disney President Bob Iger (EYE-ger) to promote him to the studio’s top job. But bloggers for the Los Angeles Times point out, the choice was criticized from the start.

“Many inside and outside Disney were skeptical at the time that a TV executive with limited film experience could transition successfully to running a large movie studio.”

Ross was Iger’s first choice to replace former chairman Dick Cook. The New York Times’ blogger Brooks Barnes says, Ross’s tenure reflects badly on the CEO.

“Mr. Iger’s hiring of Mr. Ross was heralded as a bold decision. Now his exit marks a rare blemish on Mr. Iger’s record as chief executive, partly because of the selection of Mr. Ross but also because the studio continues to be in turmoil more than two years after Mr. Iger first moved to fix it.”

Disney has not named a successor and, according to Barnes, it may take months to fill the role.

Move over Rebecca Black’s Friday — a new teen music video is racking up dislikes on YouTube.
Rather than catchy crooning about the weekend — these two ladies are singing about a subject of social significance. Take a listen.

“Hot girls we have problems too. We’re just like you. Except we’re hot. The world needs to open their eyes and realize we’re not perfect and sometimes we lie.”

Wow. The video by teen pop duo “Double Take” has already garnered nearly 2 million views — and more than 65,000 dislikes. It’s got quite a ways to go before it matches the 603,000 dislikes that Rebecca Black’s Friday has managed so far.

And the Huffington Post suggests — hot girl problems almost makes Friday look like a musical masterpiece.

“…possibly the harshest criticism Black has received to date may be this week's comparisons to Double Take...”

The video has inspired harsh criticism across the web... The Hot Hits calls it the worst song of the year.
And Pop Dust simply calls it — ridiculous.

But is the video so bad on purpose? The Mirror reports...

“…some commenters have speculated that the video may have been intended to be intentionally terrible in order to become viral.”

Radio station KISS 92.5 claims to have tracked down the members of Double Take — 17-year-old’s Lauren Willen and Drew Garrett. The radio hosts asks the ladies on air — were they serious?

“We really wanted to do it for fun. We enjoyed writing a funny song and we thought it was really entertaining. FLASH It’s not real and it’s not fake. It is what it is.”

So not real. Not fake. To that — a blogger for Crushable says...

“If you’re going to make a self-aware viral video, then give us something entertaining that’s a legitimate commentary on videos like Rebecca’s, which had no idea how bad it was, but that can also operate on its own as a bearable single.”

So what’s next for the ladies of Double Take? WPTV reports...

“The teens will graduate from high school in a few months. Though Lauren says she wants to major in international business and Drew in animal science, the girls hint their songwriting days may not be over.”

Ted Nugent’s anti-Obama lines scored him a date with the Secret Service. He told crowds at an NRA convention that Republican voters need, “to ride into battlefield and chop their heads off in November.” He also said he would end up in jail or dead if Obama was re-elected, implying he would do something illegal. Slate News says Nugent probably should have kept his mouth shut.

“After years of gun toting and bow hunting, Ted Nugent may have finally shot himself in the foot.”

But in an interview with St.Louis’s KFTK, Nugent said he welcomed the idea of a meeting with his buddies in the Secret Service. He even had a few ideas in mind for the rendezvous.

“When you say Secret Service I get a big grin on my face and know we’ll either be shooting some taxpayer ammo at targets or we’ll be eating Barbeque.”

The Secret Service will spend a little time investigating Nugent, and a CNN contributor said they’ll determine he’s not a threat, and move on. But the writer says, not so fast! Nugent should be sent to jail for threatening the President’s life.

“Allowing people to threaten the life of a president, particularly during time of war, is not protecting free speech as much as it is dangerously close to treason as it is defined in Article III of the Constitution.”

But Florida Republican Allen West defended Nugent on CNN saying his comments are being sensationalized. Here’s what he told host Soledad O’Brien.

“But I don’t think the motor city madman has any ill will toward the President of the United States of America.”

“I think he’s got a lot of ill will toward him but I think that’s a separate question whether he’s threatening violence, I think that’s night and day. No, I don’t think he likes him at all.”

Regardless of how West feels, the secret service is scheduled to meet with him. Christian Science Monitor brainstormed some talking points for Nugent and his legal team during the showdown.

“Nugent’s words aren’t rhetoric, in the sense of being an attempt to convey coherent thought. It’s better to think of them as derogatory words strung together at random. Given that, where’s the threat?”

As for what actually goes down in the meeting, we’ll probably hear soon since Nugent doesn’t tend to stay silent for long.

“Bieber Fever” may have some traumatic consequences. A 34-year-old Toronto man was accused of impersonating teen idol Justin Bieber on Facebook and forcing a 12-year old girl to perform sexual acts over video chat. WTVT reports...

“Lee Moir, 34, of Toronto, repeatedly threatened the girl when she realized he was not the ‘Baby’ singer while chatting on the ooVoo site, police in Essex County, N.J., said in a statement Wednesday.”

Undercover police then got involved. New York's WCBS says Moir was arrested after an officer impersonated a young girl online and offered to meet with Moir. It appears his online activities have been going on for awhile.

“Moir is believed to have been in contact with other young females in the United States, Canada, France, Australia and the Philippines using his Facebook and other online accounts with the usernames Lee Oneel, Lee Moir, YodaYoda01, and Justy.Beber1, according to officials.”

This is not the first incident of sexual predators doing this sort of thing to attract victims. The Huffington Post gave examples of similar indiscretions involving Michael Jackson and Elvis impersonators, both of which received jail time.

“If convicted in this most recent case, Moir faces more than 30 years behind bars.”

WABC quoted one New York child abuse prosecutor who says parents need to be more aware of their child’s actions online.

10 years, 23 seasons … and not one person of color handing out roses. That’s what’s got two Nashville men ready to sue The Bachelor. Here’s CNN:

“A couple of would-be bachelors say they were given the brush-off during their interviews to be on the show because they’re black. One plaintiff is Nathaniel Claybrooks. He’s a former college football player.”

The other plaintiff, Christopher Johnson is an aspiring National Football League player. Together, they’re planning to file a class-action lawsuit on the basis of racial discrimination. Here’s the Huffington Post:

“ … there's a black man running the White House, a black man heading the GOP house, but a black person can't get into The Bachelor/Bachelorette house? Did ABC think this glaring absence would go unnoticed? I think the public is owed an explanation.”

And it looks like ABC will have to come up with one. But for now, they’re keeping quiet — letting this conversation take to national media outlets. Here’s TMZ poking fun at ABC’s alleged discrimination.

“‘Wait. They’ve had black contestants on The Bachelor.’ ‘Not as the Bachelor.’ ‘That’s true! They’ve never had anybody other than white, caucasian, super white dudes.’ ‘Wait! This wasn’t the Bachelor?!’”

But Glen Rothstein, an attorney not involved in this case, told Hollywood Reporter successfully suing the company will not be that easy.

"The plaintiffs will more likely than not have to present at least some additional evidence above and beyond the fact that the programs have never featured a single person of color... [they’ll] have to prove that a race based component relating to the selection process exists that was implemented in a discriminatory and unlawful manner."

The lawsuit will be filed against ABC Television, Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment, NZK Productions and Michael Fleiss, the executive producer of the "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" franchises.

American icon Dick Clark died Wednesday.
MSNBC has the details.

“We’re hearing he died of a massive heart attack at the age of 82. ... Course, everyone called him America’s oldest living teenager because he looked so young and was the picture of health for so long.”

For millions of teens, especially in the 50s and 60s, Dick Clark was it.

Spinning the latest discs on American Bandstand. The teens on the show doing all the new dances and the hot performers of the day lip-syncing with the best of ‘em.

TMZ broke the story after talking to Clark’s representative.

“The TV icon had been in St. John's hospital in L.A. after undergoing an outpatient procedure last night. Clark suffered the "massive" heart attack following the procedure. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.”

Fox took a look back on Clark’s meteoric career...

“Dick Clark is an absolute hero of the industry. He hosted American Bandstand from from 1956-1989. ...and became an afterschool staple for a generation of teenagers.”

Dick Clark also created and hosted ABC’s New Years Rocking Eve for forty years. He appeared sporadically after a 2004 stroke and for New Years 2012, he was on saying this...

“Look at that picture, huh? I don’t care where you live, you won’t find anything like it. Forty years later, I still find it amazing.”

The Washington Post noted Clark’s sometimes questionable business tactics, saying...

“Mr. Clark's influence helped bolster his business dealings in the music industry, making him a target of congressional skepticism looking into payola, or bribes, paid to disc jockeys in exchange for play over the airwaves.”

But CNN chose to focus on the man who became an icon for American entertainment.

“You know, he never lost his touch. He wasn’t the same in communicating as a result of that stroke, but you know, it’s the Dick Clark you remember growing up with.”

Katie Couric once described her comedy style as “demented.”

But the latest Twitter-tivities of comedienne Sarah Silverman have critics really, really mad.

Silverman tweeted this photo of her with a pregnant-looking belly and the caption, “It’s a burrito!”

Later that day tweeting the pic again — next to a flatter-tummied pic with the caption, “Got a quickie aborsh in case R v W gets overturned.”

“R v W” is Roe versus Wade — which refers to the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. A ruling GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney has said he’d work to reverse. She was making a joke, of course — because she’s not pregnant — but The Daily Mail says she...

“...joined America's current War on Women yesterday...”

And in response to her Tweet — one follower said, “I have lost ALL respect for you and your disgusting ‘humor.’”

Some criticized the comedienne for what The New York Daily News called a “flippant” joke — but as ABC News points out...

“Sarah, if you have ever seen her stand-up, she's extremely edgy and she pushes the envelope. That's what she's about. Yes, indeed.”

Case in point:

“Guess what Martin Luther King? I had a f-ing dream too! ... Martin Loser King.”

So she’s not known for the most polite kind of comedy, but The Wrap notes...

“...despite the attention … [this] isn't really a joke about terminating a pregnancy: The only thing getting aborted is a burrito.”

You’re watching multisource entertainment video news analysis from Newsy.

Looks like Hollywood is slowly chiseling away at China’s great movie industry wall. CNN tells us how Disney’s new partnership with a Chinese company—DMG Entertainment-- could make “Iron Man 3” a huge success for both countries.

“The movie industry could take in 5 billion from Chinese moviegoers as soon as 2015 and action films like ‘Iron Man’ easily translate into foreign markets. This deal with hopefully help Disney's market and market the film there.”

Until recently, China has capped the number of foreign films it allows into the country. A blogger for Collider explains — China is now approving nearly double the number of films than it has in the past. The blogger says — Hollywood is right to be looking east.

“In a nutshell, this deal is good for Marvel because: A) It means the production will probably have more money; B) DMG Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company China will be distributing the movie in China, which is a huge audience and therefore huge profits; C) It makes inroads with Chinese audiences for future Marvel movies.”

Bloomberg says Monday’s announcement highlights the inevitable success of Disney’s strategy with China—one that has been difficult for other Hollywood studios to accomplish in the past.

“What is not innovative is when Hollywood makes blockbusters and puts them in Chinese theaters. You are talking about a market that could one become the largest film market in the world. How do you really get into China? You start producing there.”

Both Disney and DMG entertainment say the new film will include Chinese elements and a Chinese storyline, stirring rumors the next villain in the movie series will be Iron Man’s most famous foe—the Mandarin.

A reporter for CBC says these supposed Chinese elements—like the Mandarin—could help ensure the film’s story resonates strongly with Chinese audiences, a problem found in past Hollywood-China co-productions.

“The idea would be to work with this Chinese studio to make sure that they don’t upset any sensitivities, that they aren’t racially offensive in any way. Making China happy is becoming a more and more important part of doing business.”

Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, will begin filming later this year—and could be released in the U.S. as soon as May 2013.

He’s the presumptive GOP nominee for president … and he’s made all the TV rounds, except one. Here’s The View on what show Mitt Romney says he’d consider doing...

“Mitt Romney says he would definitely consider doing a guest spot on Saturday Night Live, but adds, and I quote, it would have to be funny ... He’s about as funny as this cup.”

Ouch! While the Whoopie and Joy don’t seem too excited, George Stephanopolus thinks it might be a good idea.

“I think it probably could help a little bit if Mitt Romney can pull it off, if he can kind of use his awkwardness to his advantage, turn the tables on it and seem like a guy who can take a joke.”

But don’t get all excited just yet … in the exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer, Romney says he hasn’t made any decision … but he is a fan.

“I haven’t made a decision on that, just heard about it ... So you watch it? You watch Saturday Night Live? Yeah.”

If Romney does SNL, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken to TV to poke fun at himself … remember this one?

“Top Ten Things Mitt now would like to get off his chest ... What’s up gangstas … it’s the M-I-Double Tizzle.”

So after months of watching Jason Sudeikis nail the Mitt impression, we may very well get the real Mitt Romney on SNL … but for now, we’ll still have to settle for this.

“So I guess it’s actually Willard Mitt Danger Romney JD MBA. I’ll see ya on the campaign trail! Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

<![CDATA[GMA Dethrones TODAY for One Week]]> Tue, 17 Apr 2012 17:00:00 -0500

It’s a historic winning streak the envy of anyone in TV. But now, after 16 years at the top …

the home of the number one morning show seems to have packed up and moved from Rockefeller Center to Times Square — at least for one week. Entertainment Weekly has the Nielsen numbers…

“Preliminary ratings show GMA averaging 5.147 million viewers for the week of April 9 compared to Today‘s 5.134 million. That’s a razor-thin margin of 13,000 viewers, with final numbers to come later this week.”

But let’s talk for a moment about statistical significance. 13,000 viewers. That’s 0.002 percent of either GMA or Today’s total viewers. But, the Wall Street Journal points out — it’s still a really big deal.

“These ratings drive the ad revenue, and the ad revenue drives the profit line so that really, really, matters ... ABC has been going after this prize for a very, very long time, and it’s finally coming together for them, it seems.”

In fact, in previous statements the president of ABC News said winning the morning is his top priority. But MarketWatch wonders if GMA can keep it up.

“Is ABC finally catching on at the breakfast hour? Can ABC continue the momentum? Has Matt Lauer & Co. over at NBC done something to turn off viewers after all these years? Or was this one of those blips, TV’s version of Halley’s Comet, something that occurs roughly every 75 years.”

Fluke or not, the team at GMA is pretty excited. Taking to Twitter … George Stephanopoulos posted...

"Thanks to all our @GMA viewers for giving us a week we’ll never forget. What a milestone!"

Sam Champion retweets an article on the ratings and adds … “(BIG thanks to YOU for watching!!!!!”

Jim Bell, the executive producer of the TODAY show, offered a concession speech via a statement. TV Guide has a copy...

"Today's 852-week winning streak had taken on a life of its own and as odd as it is to see it end … So as we tip our caps to the team at Good Morning America, we can also take a bow ourselves and recognize the work done by countless staffers for so long.”

Now, it’s important to note, this is all for the week after Katie Couric guest hosted GMA. And we should point out during this week, NBC’s Matt Lauer was on vacation.

The final Nielsen numbers for the week of April 9th are due out Thursday.

Pippa Middleton, little sister to future Queen Kate, could be in some big trouble after an incident in Paris over the weekend. MSNBC has the details.

“The Sun newspaper has the exclusive story, it says ‘Pippa Gun Shame, Kate Sister Smiles as Pal Aims Pistol in Street.”

Sky News says Pippa was riding in an Audi with three still-unidentified men when the driver does this—

“...holding what looks to be a semi-automatic pistol, which he holds at head level, then raises it above the head. And then also turns around and points it at the photographer.”

The UK’s The Sun says Pippa could be in real trouble.

“Last night the Paris Judicial Police were poised to launch a probe … The Sun was told: ‘If the evidence points to her involvement, she will be prosecuted. Anybody involved in the illegal use of a handgun in public is liable to arrest and interrogation.’”

But ABC News says the Sun’s got it all wrong, with Parisian police saying there isn’t an investigation. The American news outlet says even if Pippa comes out of this with a clean record, her image will not.

“But for Pippa Middleton, who has forever been known as a demure, unprovocative girl, photos from an all-in-good-fun getaway to France, have tainted that pristine image.”

According to E! Online — under French law — a conviction of toting a gun in public — even if the gun were a toy — could lead to two years behind bars.

<![CDATA[Holographic Tupac Performs for Coachella]]> Mon, 16 Apr 2012 16:40:00 -0500

BY LUKE LEONARD

Some performers are larger than life. Others — appear larger in the afterlife.

Rapper Tupac Shakur made a post-mortem appearance at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — as a holograph.

“Coachella!…(lyrics)”

The Hollywood Reporter covered the event online, reporting Tupac’s digital appearance ignited trending topics on social networking platform Twitter.

“...the hologram set Twitter on fire, as hundreds of Coachella attendees along with many thousands more watching a live feed on YouTube, tweeted in awe and disbelief.”

The trending hashtag #NowThat2PacsBack was among many circulating worldwide as the rapper took to the stage.

However a writer for the Wall Street Journal says the bare chested, saggy-jeans clad hologram creeped some people out. An attendee said...

“This place just went silent. People are genuinely horrified by the Tupac hologram.”

The video hologram composed of live footage, wire-framing and CGI, was projected in a technique by Musion, who’s technology is based on an old magician’s trick. The Verge has more details.

“The foil is based on principles set out in the old magician's illusion Pepper's Ghost, which trick audiences into thinking they're viewing a person or object rather than a simple reflection. By using a lightweight foil which mimics the properties of semi-transparent glass, Musion is able to extend the concept's scale without limiting the efficacy of the illusion.”

A performance in 2009 by Celine Dione featured a holographic Elvis. Now that the technology is here, The Guardian is asking its readers what they think about the technique and whether or not they would like to see it more.

Surprise live stage appearances during Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre’s set included global rappers 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Eminem. Coachella’s second weekend beginning April 20th will see a repeat of the performance.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed some new members Saturday night.
But some of the members of the bands being inducted didn’t make it to the festivities.

The most notable — or at least the most fussed about — absence?
Guns N’ Roses frontman and co-founder Axl Rose.
Earlier in the week, he wrote a letter to the Hall of Fame — via Facebook — to respectfully decline the invitation … and refuse induction.

Mentions of Axl’s name drew boos at the awards ceremony.
But — perhaps a bigger problem — how would the band perform without its lead singer?
Billboard reports.

“The GNR alumni [performed] a three-song set fronted by Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, who also sings for Slash's band … ‘Sweet Child O' Mine’ and ‘Paradise City’ had the Town Hall crowd on its feet and pumping its collective fists.”

A writer for the Detroit Free Press says some others missed the show, too.

“Many of the 6,000 fans and rock VIPs who packed Public Hall had hoped [for] a rare re-grouping of the Rod Stewart-led Faces. But Stewart, who missed his 1994 induction as a solo artist due to an earthquake in Los Angeles, canceled this appearance due to illness (as did Beastie Boy Adam "MCA'' Yauch.)”

Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis expressed gratitude for his band’s recognition.
But he told The Cleveland Plain Dealer it’s no swan song.

“We’re very excited about playing music right now, just like we were in 1983 — so it’s a strange moment to stop and reflect … (FLASH) we’re going somewhere. How can we stop and take an award when we’re just halfway there.”

Meanwhile, a writer for The New York Times focused on how an event held in the Midwest still had such a coastal feel, saying …

“ … much of the show’s music was rooted squarely in the country’s entertainment capitals of New York and Los Angeles. Guns N’ Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers represented two branches of California rock in the 1980s, metal and punk. And the Beastie Boys and the mercurial songwriter Laura Nyro, if they have anything in common, were celebrated as but two slices of New York’s huge, multifaceted musical culture.”

Entertainment Weekly reports the 27th annual ceremony will air May 5 on HBO.

They said it was unnecessary. Then, they said they would only do it if everyone in the LGBT community also had the privilege. But the entity “Brangelina” surprised the entertainment world yet again this week when it confirmed it was finally get married. CBS explains.

“At this benefit on Wednesday night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Angelina was wearing a really noticeable diamond on her ring finger and, so, we knew that she had worked with the jeweler named Robert Procop before on a collection, and he confirmed it, and then Brad’s manager confirmed it, so there we are.”

Pitt has not confirmed exactly why he finally bought the ring, but his seven-year partner Angelina Jolie told ABC’s Nightline last December that the couple had been getting a lot of questions from their six kids—all under the age of 11—about marriage.

“‘They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies...you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married...We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have.’”

Pitt and Jolie originally stated they were going to hold out on marriage until same-sex marriage was legal in every state. But the change of mind has not damaged the couple’s relationship with the LGBT community. A writer for Gather says,

“...gay rights group...Equality California...is backing Brad and Angie's decision to get married, even if not everyone can enjoy that privilege yet.”

Brangelina has not yet revealed any ideas for its wedding ceremony, but the media has already begun to speculate their nuptials will be a massive event. A writer for Jezebel comments on the craziness that could ensue.

“Maybe they'll jet off to space this weekend and do it there. Or maybe they'll throw a medieval feast in a dungeon at their estate in France for just their extended family and close friends and not tell us until six years from now. Or maybe all the children of the world will be invited to the wedding in a giant open field in Africa, and they'll all gather together and carry Angelina up to the altar in a massive throne.”

Right now, it’s too early to tell whether or not Brangelina’s wedding will rival that of Prince William and Kate Middleton. A writer for Cinema Blend reminds us,

“With so little information, it’s hard to guess how Pitt and Jolie might handle the wedding. They’ve been a notoriously private couple in the past...”

When and if the Brangelina wedding actually takes place, the marriage will the second for Pitt and the third for Jolie.

The last remaining single English prince could be off the market. HollyScoopTV reports...

“Prince Harry has reportedly fallen hard for pop star Mollie King. The two recently performed a late-night karaoke session at Bunga Bunga last weekend.”

Mollie who? The 24-year-old is a member of British girl group The Saturdays. Vanity Fair has more...

“Take the vague visage of a Sienna Miller, mix with the girl-group fame ambitions of early Pussycat Dolls, add the musical stylings and heritage of U.K. girl groups B*witched and All Saints, and the mall-couture tastes of an Ashley Tisdale. Voila, a future Princess”

Though nothing’s been confirmed by either party yet, that hasn’t stopped British and American media from jumping on the speculation game — and it doesn’t hurt that she has a regal last name. (Images: Daily Mail/Hello!/ABC)

The two met at a charity polo event two years ago. A source told the Daily Express that the couple is “completely smitten,” and...

“Their friendship has already blossomed into a full-blown romance, but (the source) claims the couple have tried to keep it under wraps from even closest friends. … It’s very early days for them but they’re head over heels.”

Prior to King, Harry has been linked to lingerie model Florence Brudenell-Bruce and his on-again, off-again long-term flame Chelsy Davy. According to People...

“Ladbrokes, the betting parlor, is giving 5:1 odds that King will become Harry's next girlfriend.”

And Scotland’s STV is overjoyed at the possibility of a friendship between King and Kate Middleton.

“Oh please let it be true! We love the thought of Kate Middleton and Mollie hanging out together as their princes proudly look on. Such romantics.”

BY EMILY ALLEN

For Harry Potter-loving muggles, it could be the best thing since the Nimbus 2000. Potter-creator JK Rowling has released a few new details from her upcoming book. Here’s New York’s News 12.

“Harry Potter author breaking away from the magical franchise, writing her first book for adults, it’s going to be called the Casual Vacancy.”

The Little, Brown Book Group posted a brief synopsis of the book. It starts in a town called Pagford in England where 40-year-old Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly – shocking the small town.

“Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.”

This 480-pager is Rowling’s first published novel following the completion of the Harry Potter series five years ago. She tells MTV — she wanted to wait until the Potter movies wrapped up before publicizing this project.

“I always felt that I wanted the last film to be out of the way before I, you know, made any moves on the publishing front because Harry’s so huge and I suppose my involvement with the world has been quite intense.”

A writer for the AV Club says — while the novel doesn’t sound like it has much in common with the popular Potter books — readers shouldn’t judge it on just a title and a synopsis. He notes...

“After seven books spent creating a sprawling, magical world with an incredibly intricate backstory, Rowling can probably afford to take a laid-back victory lap.”

And a blogger for iVillage says, while... “it doesn’t sound like Harry Potter to us, and it is a bit strange to see her name attached to something that isn't about the Boy Who Lived … the premise sounds interesting and it will be exciting to see whether she can write something that will sit happily on bookshelves alongside her best-selling series.”

Hollywood.com points to other successful book series authors’ attempts at branching out – take The Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyers’s The Host

… or The Hunger Game’s author Suzanne Collins’ five-book series The Underling Chronicles.

The Casual Vacancy will be available worldwide on September 27th. If you’re planning on standing in line for this one, you might wanna leave your Gryffindor robes at home.

Fox News fired the so-called ‘Fox Mole’ Wednesday. Joe Muto was an associate producer for the O’Reilly Factor and got the ax about 24 hours after he posted three blog posts with the byline “The Fox Mole” for Gawker.

Muto worked undercover for Gawker, reportedly leaking information from inside Fox. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Fox News chief Roger Ailes about “Gawker.”

“I only knew it as a pornographic website that you had to stay away from.. I don’t know anything about it.. I don’t care if they have a mole because we are not doing anything wrong so it actually doesn’t matter.”

So how did Fox uncover Muto the mole? The Huffington Post reports, From it was all about the technology. International Business Times quotes Muto saying...

“‘In the end, it was the digital trail that gave me away. They knew that someone, using my computer login, had accessed the sources for two videos that ended up on Gawker over the past few weeks. They couldn't prove it entirely, but I was pretty much the only suspect...’”

Fox is exploring its legal options. And if the threat of “exploring legal options” doesn’t scare you — maybe the mentality Fox has when it comes to releasing information with the outside world will. The Washington Post reports.

“But Fox News employees know Fox News as a clampdown operation. Defined as a “severe or concerted attempt to suppress something,” “clampdown” describes just how Fox treats the sharing of information about its operations with the outside world...Doesn’t happen, can’t happen, shall not happen. . . ."

But some are saying the next logical step from this is a book deal for Muto. ABC News says Greg Smith scored $1.5 Million after dissing former employer Goldman Sachs in the New York TImes. But a founder of a publishing agency says maybe not for Muto.

“A bit of the difference with the Goldman Sachs book is that Greg Smith was a man who was at the upper echelon, who had been there for quite a while … He also seemed to be upset for humanity. His editorial was bold, and it raised the question, what else does this guy have to say?”

Both sides are reporting violations of Syria’s cease-fire.

Here’s the BBC.

“The truce is clearly shaky. ... The military are still there in the towns, cities and villages. Their total withdrawal — along with tanks and heavy weapons — was supposed to be the first step in the Annan peace plan … ”

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate nears an all-time low.

Fox Business goes to the big board for the numbers.

“We flash to the latest read on the 30-year mortgage from Freddie Mac — 3.88%, down again — down from 3.98% last week.”

A special skimming vessel is headed to the Gulf of Mexico to start cleaning up a 10-mile long oil spill.
CNN reports.

“It’s situated about 130 miles southeast of New Orleans between two of the Royal Dutch Shell’s drilling rigs. The company says there’s no indication either is responsible for that oil spill."

Audiences in China have shelled out the equivalent of $24 per ticket to see ‘Titanic 3D,’ but there are two things they won’t see on the big screen.

Blogger Perez Hilton reports China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has censored Kate Winslet’s breasts in the 3D version of the flick.

One hundred years after the Titanic sank and 15 years after the original movie came out, ‘Titanic 3D’ is being released across the world. But the audience in China will be missing out on a highly-anticipated asset. According to a writer for Minyanville...

“When the 1997 blockbuster Titanic was released in China this week in all its dazzling, three-dimensional glory, the film was missing something. Two things, really. Worry not. Chinese audiences are still being taken on the thrilling roller coaster ride that was the very real-life terror of human beings perishing in the deadliest maritime disaster in peacetime history.”

China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television censored some of the racier scenes in the movie — most importantly Kate Winslet’s breasts won’t be in 3D during her famous nude scene. She’ll only be shown from the neck up. But why? According to the official release...

“Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people’s viewing. To avoid potential conflicts between viewers and out of consideration of building a harmonious ethical social environment, we’ve decided to cut off the nudity scenes.”

Blogger Perez Hilton thinks the Chinese audience is being robbed of the intended experience. He posted his most sincere apologies...

“Our hearts go out to Titanic fans in China! They won't be able to draw Rose like one of Jack's French girls!... What a travesty!”

Screenings of the 3D film sold out throughout China before the film was released. That — despite a 150-yuan, or $24, price tag. So, what are audience members saying? Apparently one Chinese blogger isn’t too pleased with the censored version.

"I've been waiting almost 15 years, and not for the 3D icebergs.”

And another blogger is more concerned about what this means in the greater scheme of things.

“15 years ago in Titanic, we got to see the nudity scenes. 15 years later in Titanic 3D, the scenes are censored out. This shows exactly how many steps forward we’ve made in terms of technology and how many steps backward we’ve made in terms of freedom.”

An online survey was taken about the movie, and 73 percent said the movie was great. The survey conductor said the omission of Kate’s breasts wasn’t too big of a deal because the bigger message is still there.

"'Titanic' shows us what love is about. Many people nowadays pay too much attention to material wealth, especially on who they should marry,"

Well, hopefully the people of China’s hearts will go on... without Kate’s breasts.

George Zimmerman will make his first court appearance Thursday after second-degree murder charges were filed against him.

Fox News reports the charges carry a maximum of life in prison …

“ … and unlike a manslaughter charge, it will require prosecutors to prove Zimmerman killed Martin intentionally and not in self-defense as he claims.”

Both sides appear to be respecting the cease-fire deadline in Syria.

Here’s euronews.

Disaster officials are expressing relief that only five people died.

20,000 people died in the 2004 tsunami.

Finally, MTV reports Guns N’ Roses frontman and co-founder Axl Rose will not attend his band’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland this weekend.

Rose wrote a letter to the Hall of Fame — on Facebook — and said he, quote, “respectfully declined.”

Joe Scarborough weighed in on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“The Sex Pistols are the only band previously declined being inducted. Let me just say, the Sex Pistols are cool enough to pull this off, Axl Rose — not.”

Disney announced Tuesday it is getting into the animation market in China. Film Business Asia reports the company will partner with China’s biggest Internet company — Tencent Holding — and a state-owned group to create animated films. Here’s managing director of The Walt Disney Company China Stanley Cheung.

"Our philosophy is to operate as the Chinese Walt Disney Company and as such will remain front and centre to help local creative talent realise their dreams and help to create one of the most dynamic original animation industry sectors in the world.”

According to the LA Times — China sees animation as a tool to spread Chinese culture to the world.

“China’s government has identified animation as a key area for development to boost the country’s global influence, or soft power. The success of DreamWorks Animation’s 'Kung Fu Panda' franchise has sparked wide debate within China about why the country can’t leverage its culture as effectively as Hollywood.”

Disney isn’t the only entertainment company looking to tap into the Chinese market. As The Wrap reports...

“Two months ago, rival DreamWorks Animation unveiled its own joint venture with three Chinese companies, Oriental DreamWorks, which will create animated and feature films in the region. Many other Hollywood players have similar plans.”

And many analysts say — it’s a good move for Disney, and other entertainment giants. Bloomberg reports...

“China is one of the world’s fastest growing film markets. In 2010, the Asia Pacific box office grew by 21 percent with China accounting for 40 percent of the growth, the Motion Picture Association of America said in February 2011.”

But creating animation film is only one of Disney’s strategies in China.

According to ABC — Disney is constructing a $3.7-billion theme park in Shanghai that will open in 2017.

What’s the worst part of flying? If you said stripping off your socks, shoes, belt and accessories, chances are, you’re not alone. But one woman took “stripping” to a whole new level Tuesday morning. Barely able to keep it together, anchors for ABC’s World News Now explain what went down at the Denver International Airport.

“This woman was smoking in an area you’re not supposed to smoke in. And so the guy says, ‘Oh, can you put your cigarette out?’ And she says, ‘You know what, I’m just going to get naked right here at the airport. I’m not going to put out my cigarette.’ At 9:00 in the morning, took off all her clothes, and then asked an airport staffer, ‘If you could please re-print my boarding pass.’”

For a cool $3,000, TMZ managed to snag an exclusive photo of the unclothed woman. It published it to the website under the headline “TSA Meets T&A” – and called the incident bizarre.

Denver’s KDVR spoke to one passenger who describes the scene at the airport – saying other travelers didn’t really have time to laugh at the incident – they were more shocked than anything else.

“No one really noticed her at first because people were trying to get on their planes. And then about two minutes later, everybody realized she was buck naked...He says the woman’s behavior had parents running to cover their children’s eyes. Some, just stared.”

A writer for the sop.com has a different take on the incident – saying what attracted attention first was likely not the naked woman.

“In this day and age when smoking is even banned in some public parks, it's a greater breach of etiquette for a woman to smoke in a non-smoking area than it is for her to strip in the middle of an airport concourse. Folks probably noticed that she was smoking in a non-smoking, before they realized she was stark naked. If you are going to be a rebel and break the rules, you might as well break them all.”

So what happened after the woman stripped down to her birthday suit? A blogger for West Word explains authorities weren’t so much concerned for safety...but the woman’s mental state.

“[The woman] was taken to Denver Health for a mental health evaluation. Meanwhile, Fox31 reporter Justin Joseph reveals that there's a video of the incident, for which TMZ is apparently thinking about shelling out $10,000. Eat your heart out, Khloe and Beyonce.”

Authorities say the woman will not be arrested or face charges.

The Miss Universe organization announced Tuesday it will end its ban on transgender contestants. The decision comes after heavy criticism for disqualifying competitor Jenna Talackova because she was born male. CNN has more.

“The policy change comes after a 23-year-old Canadian was banned from competing. Organizers had learned she underwent sexual reassignment surgery four years ago. Lawyer Gloria Allred had threatened to sue Trump's group.”

But Donald Trump — who runs the pageant — says the rule change is being made in spite of, not because of, Allred’s threats. In fact—he tells Fox Business News the hot button issue of letting a transgender contestant compete has been one his organization has debated for a while now. The new policy takes effect in 2013.

“We’re going by at some point the Olympic rules because the Olympics are having a big question about this—should this be allowed. We have 58 contestants in Canada—I said let her run and maybe she’ll win.”

One GLAAD spokesperson said in a press release — the trail-blazing decision could help inspire even more positive change within the transgender community.

And a columnist for the London Free Press says they all have Talackova, the Canadian beauty contestant, to thank for the change.

“Talackova could have skulked away sheepishly after being disqualified, but she didn’t. … She chose to stand and fight to be recognized as what she always thought she was, she says, since the age of four…”

But despite approving the policy change and lending his support, Trump told Access Hollywood he still remains a little skeptical of the Canadian contestant’s motivation.

REPORTER: “She got the name at 16 when the operation happened…”

TRUMP: “All I know is we allowed her to be in the competition and when you look at her name, her first letters are Jenna Tal. Is this some kind of con going on...?”

Names aside, Talackova will be competing for the crown in the Miss Canada Universe pageant on May 19th in Toronto.

Jennifer Hudson is back in the spotlight … not for her career… but for a murder trial. WGN reports

“...seven men, seven women, four more to go to seat 12 jurors and four alternates. William Balfour is charged with killing Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew.”

Jennifer Hudson’s name came up a lot during jury selection. The judge and both attorneys looked to rid themselves of those who might be swayed by lights surrounding the Dreamgirls’ star name. Newsday gives an example ...

“One woman in her 30s, … was dismissed Monday after she told those assembled, including Balfour, that she is a fan of Hudson's and would be unable to give the defendant a fair trial.”

A legal expert told EOnline that Hudson could distract from the trial at hand

“‘Her presence at the trial could have a huge impact...’”

“‘Star power always matters. The prosecutor wants her there and the defense does not want her there,’… ‘The jury could be looking at her reactions, if she is crying, how she reacts to certain testimony. They are going to be very aware of her presence.’”

A defense attorney from the O.J. Simpson trial told the Huffington Post her reactions might lead to something other than sympathy …

“The risk is that jurors may be watching her rather than testifying witnesses, and they could be influenced by how she reacts ... She would be well advised not to engage in any facial expressions or outbursts. That could be grounds for a mistrial.”

But, experts are also saying if Hudson stays … she might be the key to a conviction.

“... despite the chance a mistrial could be declared, the prosecution may consider Hudson's involvement ‘a risk worth taking.’

Despite the legal uncertainties, a CourtTv reporter says Hudson should be there for personal reasons.

"It's important for Jennifer Hudson to be there, as it is for any family member of someone who was murdered. They're there for the victim. They're there for their loved one. They're there to show that they care and they want to see justice."

Is dancing -- proving to be dangerous? “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital after her performance Monday night.

HLN takes a look at the routine.

“Apparently this is the move that did that. Former “Little House on the Prairie” star apparently hit her head and then she was feeling dizzy.”

Gilbert later tweeted...

“I'm alright. Mild concussion and whiplash. Very soon I will be safely home resting and being taken care of.”

Gilbert had already been dealing with back injuries from earlier in the season, which some believe may have contributed to the concussion.

And The New York Daily News reports Gilbert isn’t the only one suffering this season.

“Injuries on "Dancing With the Stars" are a common fact of life. So far this season, Menounos has already suffered from two broken ribs and stress fractures on her feet. The "Extra" TV host hopped on partner Derek Hough's back for a piggyback ride off the stage after their performance.”

Panelists told ABC’s Good Morning America it’s just that time in the season.

“But this is the point in the competition when injuries start to happen because it’s incredibly physically demanding. Every week you never have a day off. You’re dancing like crazy.”

And Gilbert isn’t the only one getting attention for the injury incident.

“Your boy carried her out, apparently. Your rocker guy. Gavin. Carried her down and Maks brought her to the hospital. Gotta like that team stuff.”

How chivalrous. Pop star Gavin DeGraw said anyone would’ve done the same thing. Even though he didn’t know exactly what he was getting into.

“It was further than I thought. I wasn’t sure how far it was but it dawned on me how far it was when my arms wouldn’t work anymore. Then I was like, “aw man!”

It hasn’t been confirmed if Gilbert will participate in the elimination show.

“I made this book so that people can always remember, you can roll with an expert. You can roll with Snoop...”

According to the Dieline, “Rolling Words” was created to promote Snoop’s new Kingsize Slim Rolling Papers.

“Each page is a rolling paper with Snoop’s greatest songs and lyrics written on them - in non-toxic ink – for your rolling pleasure. The pages are perforated making them easy to detach.”

And depending where you are, the new book might be easy to get.
Although specific details of the book’s release haven’t been released yet, Fuse TV says the...

“...[music festival] Coachella attendees will get a chance to sample the rolling papers from books available at the festival.”

So what are fans saying about Snoop’s book? Zimbio says, it’s all good.

“The fan response has, of course, been favorable, with YouTube comments ranging from ‘TAKE MY MONEY NOW! where do i buy this?’ to ‘He will sell more of these books than J.K.Rowling with Harry Potter !’”

On the other hand, a blogger for the Phoenix New Times isn’t as enthused.

“While the physical "consumability" of books is nothing new... we do believe Dogg might be onto something ... terrible.”

In the stunning return to television, HBO's hit series Game of Thrones continues to rule TV sets around the world.

The show, which is currently in it’s second season, premiered on April 1st, returning with everything viewers came to expect from the first season: Blood, sex, power and betrayal.

But they’re not the only things that have kept audience interest in the show. The Sydney Morning Herald reports :

“With its powerful combination of magic, sex and political intrigue, Game of Thrones has become a pop-culture sensation.”

‘Game of Thrones’ is set in the mythical Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and follows the brutal dynastic struggles of the Kingdom’s nobility, as they plot, scheme and fight for the Iron Throne.

According to The Brisbane Times, the series’ main strength comes from its intricate storyline and rich character detailing, all of whom suffer from their own …

“...intrigues, jealousies, and passions - often incestuous and much on display - and a keen willingness to kill each other. Confusing but riveting, the show's complexity seems to be one of its great attractions.”

“Sometimes I wonder if this is the price for what we’ve done - for our sins.”

The series’ success is also reflected through its ratings, which surged following Season 1, returning as the most-watched scripted show on cable television. The New York Times has the numbers :

“The ‘Game of Thrones’ second-season premiere averaged 3.9 million viewers for its first play on Sunday night at 9 p.m. That was up 74 percent from the premiere in the first season, 2.2 million.”

Wired sheds some light on why the show is so popular with viewers …

“A devilish mix of Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy with good old sex and violence is fueling the fervor. The show appeals to fans of the George R.R. Martin books upon which it’s based as well as to Joe Sixpack types who like gritty HBO dramas - and the audience is growing.”

And Rolling Stone agrees …

“It's designed to appeal to those of us who hate fantasy sagas. No centaurs, no wizards, no unicorns. Instead, it sticks to the timeless combo of breasts and beheadings.”

If you're still wondering what it's all about, The Independent makes it all too clear …

“It's like Tolkien, but with naughty bits.”

While only two episodes have aired from the second season, fans around the world eagerly await more of HBO’s critically acclaimed epic.

‘Game of Thrones’ airs Sundays at 9/8 central.

He’s starred in actions, comedies, dramas and more. But now, Matt Damon is wading into the world of controversial movies. Ecorazzi has details...

“Matt Damon, actor and advocate for clean water, will star in the new anti-fracking film ‘Promised Land.’ The ‘Good Will Hunting’ star co-wrote the film with actor John Krasinski, based on a draft written by Dave Eggers who wrote the screenplay for ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ Damon and the rest of the cast will be directed by Gus Van Sant (‘Good Will Hunting’).”

The Academy Award-winning actor is known for being open about his political views. He co-founded safe-water non-profit Water.org. Damon’s also commented on the war in Iraq, and made news after saying then-vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin was a ‘bad Disney movie.’
(VIDEO: Youtube/Water.org)

But Big Hollywood says he hasn’t been so open about “Promised Land.”

Matt Damon isn't shy about his political leanings, witness projects like ‘Green Zone’ and his ties to late radical historian Howard Zinn. But the ‘Bourne’ star is keeping mum about his latest project, ‘Promised Land,’”

Details released earlier revealed the basics of the plot. Damon plays a businessman whose life changes after moving to a small town, with John Krasinski playing his rival business exec. But CinemaBlend says now that we know the central conflict is about fracking, things have changed...

“With this fracking detail, The Promised Land immediately has a new dimension. No longer just a drama about dueling business execs this will likely be a tale of ethics and political arguments.”

The practice of fracking involves pumping a mix of water, chemicals and sand into a well to fracture rocks, which releases natural gas. If you think a movie about fracking is out of the ordinary, think again. Politico writes...

Movies about fracking have been springing up ever since the Josh Fox-directed film ‘Gasland,’ catapulted the practice into the national spotlight. It was nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2011.”

CinemaBlend reports production will begin later this month, and is expected to run through June.

It’s hard to find a place where smoking is still allowed. Luckily, your footwear is an exception. The New York Daily News describes a new pair of smoking hot shoes...

“Prada has come out with a pair of stiletto-heeled sandals with bright pink patent leather lips with dangling leather cigarettes and smoke.”

A blogger for The Stir comments, at $890, they're probably the most expensive way to get your cigarette fix, and definitely the healthiest way.

“Your feet may be aching after walking a few blocks in these puppies, but your lungs won't be burning at all. Forget patches, these shoes are certainly the hottest way to wear nicotine this season.”

Whether you pick up a pair or not - The Huffington Post says there are plenty of new heels that are pushing the envelope - and wonders how far is it gonna go.

“Sinning heels are so hot right now. Last week we brought you the magic of the Christian Louboutin (Leh Boo Tahn) "Sex" shoes, a pair of $1400 pumps that spell out the letters S-E-X when the wearer stands with her feet together...What's next? Shoes that proclaim, "I'M BREAKING CURFEW RIGHT NOW"?”

The fashion industry is often criticized for promoting smoking. But designers have an argument to offer - using the platform of creative expression as an excuse. The Daily Mail reports...

“...despite aggressive anti-smoking campaigns and regulations in many countries, fashion stylists and designers have continued to use smoking imagery to either shock, or evoke historic ideas of glamour and power...To the fashion industry, smoking says history and style, it's a bit dreamy, a bit intellectual, it's 'glamorous'.”

But the new heels - have some saying Prada should know better and not promote smoking. The Daily Bhaskar comments...

“When fashion fraternity is increasingly becoming socially responsible, Prada seems to have cared none.”

The Styleite points out the shoes would cost the equivalent of 80 packs of cigarettes in New York City and could actually help stop people from buying cigarettes.

“But maybe this is Prada’s version of an anti-smoking PSA — who could afford $14 a pack after buying $890 shoes?”

The shoes are in such high demand that Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City is limiting buyers to three pair every thirty days. So if you are a shoe fan, go get them while they’re hot.

Nicki Minaj named the most influential female in the rap industry of all time? Here comes the backlash.

While the sensational claim from the New York Times has raised questions, the female rapper is undoubtedly one of the most successful female artists in the hip-hop and rap industries. Pop Stop TV reports …

“The 29-year-old young-money MC has turned heads with hit Zs like ‘Super Bass’ and ‘Your Love.’ Now the Times has praised her with the greatest honor.”

According to the New York Times …

“ … when she releases her second album, ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,’ this week, it will be as the most influential female rapper of all time.”

But proving that not everybody’s as excited, a blogger for The LA Times strongly disagrees …

“It’s hard to witness, actually, an artist whose craft should be cresting, with enough power in the business to call her own aesthetic shots, chasing the money at the expense of the art … It would be best if Minaj's ‘Roman Reloaded’ fails as a commercial endeavor in the same way that its worst instincts fail artistically. Maybe then she'll stop trying to greedily be all things to all people and focus on what got her here in the first place: that ridiculous flow, wit, and imagination.”

Hip Hop Wired agrees, stating …

“ … early on in her career, Nicki Minaj cribbed much of her style heavily from one Lil' Kim … While there is no question Nicki Minaj is one of the Hip-Hop game's most influential artists, saying she is the most influential female artist of all time is a reach.”

Roman Reloaded sold 375,000 copies in its first week.

When tourism is down, there’s nothing better to get it back up than a video of naked men humping the air. Let us preface this by saying you might want to pause and watch this story later if you are at work, a public library or have small children in the room.

Yes, that was exactly what it looked like, a bunch naked people, humping. This is just one of the video series posted on YouTube by user OnkelSaft, or translated to English, “Uncle Juice”. Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet got in contact with the user, and even though Uncle Juice refused to disclose his or her real name, Uncle Juice did explain why they made the videos...

“The idea behind this is to create a renewed awareness of the beautiful sights in Trondheim. We are very fond of the city of Trondheim as you can imagine!”

Several Norway landmarks are featured in Uncle Juice’s video series, including the The Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Norway’s The Local reports they weren’t too pleased the filmmakers included its logo and slogan in the video. An NTNU spokesman tells them...

“It goes without saying that we wouldn’t have given our approval if they had come and asked our permission to make this kind of video...”

Uncle Juice did remove NTNU’s slogan and logo after being requested. So the question remains... are these videos enticing people to visit Norway? Perhaps. Several gay blog sites have shared the videos with positive reviews. A blogger on Queerty.com writes...

“A trip to Trondheim, Norway, wasn’t exactly on our bucket list, but after [watching] a series of viral videos from Onkel Saft and his frisky friends, we might have to reconsider.”

So, who’s headed to Norway?

You're watching multisource global video news analysis.

The commercial of Mary J. Blige promoting a chicken wrap for Burger King premiered Monday but was removed from the fast-food chain’s YouTube channel shortly after being criticized for stereotyping blacks. Gawker has a snippet of the commercial:

“(Customer) Uh, what’s in those new chicken snack wraps? (Manager) What’s in the new chicken snack – (Mary J. Blige) What’s in the new chicken wraps? (pause) (Manager) Mary…”

Both BK and Blige have been highly criticised for the controversial ad. Here’s CraveOnline --

“Soul queen Mary J. Blige is in quite a bit of hot water...after fans have set upon her new Burger King commercial...making a mockery of herself and encouraging damaging black stereotypes.”

Critics have also blamed BK for tarnishing Blige’s image saying that having a prominent black woman doing such an ad is inappropriate and insulting. Ad writer Thembisa Mshaka posts on her blog --

“Salma Hayek gets to showcase her versatility as an actor...David Beckham doesn’t have to use his talent as an athlete at all! Mary? She has to sing her way through the commercial after busting in on it.”

But not everyone agrees the commercial is bad. The Blemish says --

“I disagree...Fried chicken is so delicious...it transcends all race...Blige didn’t seem rude, terse and invasive in that ad. She just looked like she was dialing it in. Like in the back of her mind she was wondering if pushing snack wraps at Burger King is what her life has become.”

Black Enterprise seems more curious about the reason behind making the commercial, even showing sympathy of some sort.

“At this point, I just wonder what...real response [BK] will have about this, and more importantly, what’s behind Blige’s thinking? Mary, I still love you, girl. We all make mistakes. Let’s just chalk this up as a slip in judgment.”

Some - The Detroit News - even think BK’s ad is beneficial to Blige.

“...the Burger King spot...did something her recent career moves haven’t been able to do: They got people talking about Mary J. Blige again...maybe it leads to a renewed appreciation of her talents and what she should stand for, which in the end isn’t all that bad.”

BK says it pulled the ad due to licensing reasons but hopes the ad will be back on air soon.

Keith Olbermann appeared on 'The David Letterman Show' airing out the dirty laundry between him and his former employer, Current TV. He admits he played a role in his termination, but not without sarcasm. CBS has Olbermann’s remarks.

“I screwed up really big on this. Let’s just start there. I thought we could do this. it’s my fault that it didn’t succeed in the sense that I didn’t think the whole thing through.”

In a statement on Current TV’s website, the company explains why it broke ties with Olbermann- saying the company was founded on the values of

“...respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.”

While Olbermann may not have thought through his contract with Current TV, he has given a lot of thought to the lawsuit he plans to file.

“Remember the lawyer in the Conan case? Those people across the way. Remember the NBC people, they got a lawyer involved. She’s my lawyer.”

According to the Chicago Suntimes, Conan O’Brien’s lawsuit against NBC over The Tonight Show ended with a reported 45 million dollar settlement for O’Brien. No matter how Olbermann’s lawsuit ends, critics are still questioning what’s next for the sharp talking tv host.

“Is there anywhere else Olbermann can go or is this sort of it for television? So let’s count this out here. ESPN, FOX Sports, MSNBC, Current TV. You know maybe Keith Olbermann doesn’t need tv.”

Even if Olbermann is unable to find a new home with another company, The Daily Beast says he still has a chance to have his voice heard - comparing Olbermann’s tv history with another controversial figure.

“One thing that we’ve seen so far is that Glenn Beck went a different route after leaving not so peacefully from his former news home. He is now self employed and running his own eponymous media brand and doing very well.”

James Cameron’s blockbuster film Titanic was released for a second time Wednesday- this time, in 3D. The 18 million dollar conversion took even more time than it did to originally film the movie. CBS News spoke to Cameron leading up to the re-release.

“It took 300 artists working at workstations for over a year, about 60 weeks, to literally outline every object every character every feature on every face and do it for every frame.”

The original release in 1997 attracted movie-goers to the cinemas-- sometimes multiple occasions-- to watch gripping romance unfold . But will the same audiences now a decade older choose to see it again as it returns to the big screen? A writer for Capital New York thinks there’s reason to...

“Titanic 3-D’s audiences won't be there because they want to see the film again. They’ll be there because they want to experience something from the past, to recapture or revise the original experience of watching the film.”

But some film critics and blogs are suggesting the 3D release may just be a ploy to make more money from the already second-highest grossing film of all time. A contributor for The Green Bay Press Gazette says...

“The fact that it’s being reissued to coincide with the 100th anniversary, it seems more like commercialization of a tragic event and playing the 3-D card in order to make extra income. That may make it a nonevent, and maybe it’ll just do the same numbers as ’Star Wars.’”

Regardless, the question is- what does 3D bring to the table for audiences? A writer for Philly.com argues only certain films are suitable for 3D.

“The hues of "Titanic," by comparison, do not lend themselves to 3-D. I spent an hour flipping the glasses up and down, comparing the images, and with the glasses on, what you see on screen is murkier. Everything loses a little definition, a little life.”

Cameron broke box office records in 2009 with his sci-fi action 3D extravaganza, Avatar. So- a writer for New York Daily News says adding another dimension to the already momentous Titanic is doing exactly what Cameron is best at.

“Cameron is in his element steering us through the eye-popping, pulse-pounding final hour. He never loses his way amidst the now even more spectacular spectacle.”

You can catch Titanic 3-D in cinemas as of April 4th.

This announcement does not need an introduction … Dumb and Dumber 2, is slated to start production later this year. One half of the Farrelly brothers duo dropped the bomb this past weekend ComingSoon.net reports

‘‘We're getting set to shoot 'Dumb and Dumber 2' in September’ … ‘It's the first sequel we've ever done‘

And the directing duo says — original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are on board.

So how anticipated will this cult comedy sequel really be? An International Business Times writer says, the movie is already up for a top honor on his list...

“I am prepared to add "Dumb and Dumber 2" to the list of 'Best Sequels of All Time,' months or even years ahead of its release. “

But is this really a sequel? The movie hit theaters almost 18 years ago … some say the movie already has a sucessor with Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. But AceShowBIz quotes Peter Farrelly saying this ...

'We did not do “Dumb and Dumberer.” That was a studio thing.’

And maybe you shouldn’t get your hopes up just yet. The sequel hasn’t made it to a studio. EW reports Farrelly may have jumped the gun.

“...the film is ‘moving along, but it’s not greenlit yet.’”

A writer from Christian Post agrees.

“The announcement, though exciting for fans, is a little dubious--the interview took place on April 1, and an April Fools' joke could be at play.”

But this is no prank. The other half of the Farrelly’s duo, Bobby backs up his big brother to the National Post.

“The ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty years later in life”

Expect this buildup to take a while. It could a year or longer to get dumb and dumber to a theatre near you.

Adam Sandler makes Hollywood history -- but it’s not quite an honor. The Razzies recognize the worst in box office flops. Sandler’s “Jack and Jill” took home the gold in … every … single ... category. But Sandler wasn’t the only one to receive the -- ahem -- honor for the cross-dressing comedy flop.

“Al Pacino, who played himself in a cameo appearance in Jack and Jill was named worst supporting actor and he also received a mention in the worst screen couple category along with co-star Katie Holmes.”

The movie did receive widely terrible reviews getting only 3% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. But one writer for the Washington Post argues -- it wasn’t as bad as Breaking Dawn Part 1.

“I mean, did “Jack and Jill” feature a grown man falling in love with a baby, or talking CGI wolves, or a childbirth scene that reportedly caused some people to have seizures? No, it did not. … It’s so boring when one movie’s horrendousness completely overshadows the notable faults of other less-than-stellar films.”

Forbes says the Razzie sweep won’t bother Sandler.

“The former Saturday Night Live star is one of the few actors in Hollywood who is still practically guaranteed a $20 million upfront paycheck for his movies. … So give him all the Razzies you want. Sandler can laugh all the way to the bank.”

For those disappointed that Sandler didn’t show to collect his prestigious awards, Hollywood.com says not to worry -- there might be another opportunity soon.

“While Sandler opted to not pull a Sandra Bullock or Halle Berry and show up to collect his Razzie(s), the star will likely get another shot next year with his upcoming feature That's My Boy. The guy is an awards show (dedicated to horrendously bad movies) darling if there ever was one.”

Traditionally, the Razzies are held on the eve of the Oscars. But this year, the founders opted to have the awards ceremony on April Fool’s day.

Katie Couric and Sarah Palin are facing off, again. But this time it isn’t in an interview. They’re guest hosting competing morning shows.

The former Alaska governor started off her appearance on the Today Show by poking fun at the famous interview and the impressions that followed.

“Oh man she’s doing her homework. Oh geez, Matt. Nicest lady in the world stopped me and asked where I was headed. I said 30 Rock and she said ‘Oh, honey come here! I told you Tina Fey is here!’”

Couric is co-hosting her former rival show, Good Morning America, all week. The morning show face-off has been highly anticipated. An analyst for CNN chalks the casting choices up to competition.

“They’re both trying to get some publicity because Good Morning America has been closing in on the Today Show. Today Show has been number one for 16 consecutive years but Good Morning America has always been nipping at its heels and they’ve gotten really close.”

So... who won the co-host battle royale? A blogger for Politico said it’s hard to judge when one party didn’t really participate.

“...Sarah Palin played it for laughs – at her own expense – while Katie Couric didn’t play at all. … Palin showed off a strikingly different personality than her usual serious self on Fox News.”

While the New York Daily News criticized Palin’s performance differently, saying “too much lipstick, not enough pitbull.”

The former Vice Presidential candidate has been a Fox News contributor and has a reality show on TLC. A writer for Forbes wonders if this move has always been part of her plan.

“What once seemed like a canny way to sidestep the carnival now seems like part of a reasonably straightforward plan to use partisanship as a ladder to a public career that has little to do with political activity.”

At the end of her time on the show, Palin was asked what it was like to be a part of what she has called, the lamestream media. She said it was “organized chaos.”

In his 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama had many celebrity supporters including long-time friend Oprah Winfrey. On Monday Oprah told CBS’ “This Morning” she will not publicly back Obama this time around.

“I’m not going to be out there. I’m 100 percent behind our president. I actually love our president, and have the utmost respect for him and that office and what it takes to be there. I will not be out because I’m trying to fix a network.”

Since its debut in January of 2011 Oprah’s network OWN has struggled to find an audience. The Tampa Bay Times says this is something Winfrey is not very accustomed to.

“I don’t know if she’s used to being on the wrong side of events the way she has been over the last year or so. OWN debuted and got tremendous numbers when it first debuted, but then it struggled in the ratings every since.”

But according to Popeater.com, working on making her struggling network a success might not be the only reason for hanging back.

“An October 2008 Gallup poll before the rallies but after Oprah's public endorsement of Obama found that Oprah's favorable ratings had fallen from 74 to 66 percent while her unfavorable ratings jumped from 17 to 26 percent."

But don’t think this will keep Oprah from supporting the president. ABC News blogger Devin Dwyer says she’s still supporting his campaign financially.

"Oprah appeared last month at an intimate, high-dollar fundraiser for Obama’s re-election effort at the Atlanta home of actor-producer Tyler Perry. Tickets for the event were $35,800 per person."

Oprah does seem to have some clout with voters. Some research done after the 2008 election showed that her endorsement increased not only the number of votes Obama received, but the number of votes cast overall.

From the little screen — to the big screen. Angry Birds is set to launch a series of animated episodes — and later — a movie. CNet has the scoop.

“The wildly popular game is being turned into an animated series expected to debut this fall...Rovio's head of animation... also confirmed that an Angry Birds movie is the works, but it won't be released for a couple of years.”

A writer for The Register previews the format of the animated episodes.

“The series will be between two-and-a-half and three minutes each in order to lend itself to distribution across as many connected devices as possible...”

The Daily Mail reports — looking at the game’s success, moving the birds to the big screen makes sense.

“Angry Birds has been downloaded 700 million times, and parent company Rovio is now estimated to be worth £5.6 billion, just two years after the game first launched.... Rovio animation head Nick Dorra said at a conference in Cannes: 'Angry Birds will, in the future, be less and less about the slingshot.'”

A columnist for The Telegraph quotes Dorra as saying — as the company expands beyond games, it’s looking to Disney as a role model.

“Rovio recently announced plans to bring the Angry Birds characters into the real world too, with a range of childrens' activity parks. The first park...will open in Finland at the end of this month...”

In order to distribute the series to as many platforms as possible — The Guardian reports Rovio is teaming up with another tech powerhouse to build a video app.

“...A deal with Samsung announced in January this year that involves an app for the company's range of Smart TV internet-connected televisions...”

The animated series is due this Fall.

Vegas ditched the slots and showgirls for some boot-scootin-boogie. CBS broadcast the Academy of Country Music Awards and country music’s leading ladies stole the show.

Taylor Swift won over fans who voted her Entertainer of the Year. Lambert won female vocalist of the year and album of the year.

Swift also won Entertainer of Year in 2011 and MTV says the back-to-back victory was unlikely.

“As the only girl in an all-male category, Taylor Swift faced some long odds to win her second consecutive Entertainer of the Year… But the 22-year-old proudly became just the second woman to pull off the double play in the fan-voted category…”

A solo Swift arrived alone to the award show after her date was too ill to attend. New Jersey teen and cancer patient Kevin McGuire asked Taylor Swift to prom--but the singer invited him to the ACMs instead. WXYZ explains.

“Swift took a moment to say hello to Kevin McGuire and his family. He was the high school football player suffering from leukemia. He was supposed to be her date.”

Power couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert added more hardware to their mantle last night. Shelton won male vocalist of the year and Lambert tied legends Alabama and George Strait by winning album of the year for the third time — a win the LA Times said even shocked Lambert.

“...she came to the stage and asked, ‘Seriously’? I own every record in this category and I’ve been thinking, ‘Man, I’m not going to get it.’ … I am so thrilled, I will never take this trophy for granted. My albums are my babies.”

Other honorees included Lady Antebellum for Vocal Group of the Year, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson for Vocal Event of the Year and Toby Keith stealing Video of the Year with “Red Solo Cup.” But HLN shows us they weren’t the only ones taking the cake---the wedding cake that is.

“A real life couple even got married at last night’s awards. The two both lost spouses in 2009 and met at a support group.”

The couple exchanged vows alongside Martina McBride and Train’s Pat Monahan. But the show wasn’t all about country music elite, Marc Anthony, Bono and KISS made appearances as well as actors Steve Martin and Ashton Kutcher.

No, this one isn’t an April Fool’s joke! Variety reported Sunday -- Hollywood heartthrob Ashton Kutcher will play Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic titled “Jobs.”

The ‘Two and a Half Men’ star will portray Jobs’ transformation from quote “wayward hippie to ... one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of our time.” And we have to admit -- he does bear a striking resemblance to the late CEO.

So, it’s no joke. But apparently not everyone was so sure, given the unfortunate timing of the news. Variety’s Jeff Sneider, who broke the story, took to the social media site to defend his scoop.

“We discussed holding it until Monday for fear of readers dismissing it as a joke, but felt it was too big a scoop to risk losing. It’s TRUE!”

The New York Times reports -- the film will be directed by Joshua Michael Stern -- and it’ll have some competition.

“This ‘Jobs’ film is unrelated to a film adaptation of Walter Isaacon’s best-selling biography ‘Steve Jobs’ that Sony Pictures Entertainment is preparing. (As is often the case with Apple, there’s always a new product or upgrade to contend with every few months.)”

That biopic will reportedly feature either George Clooney or Noah Wyle as Jobs. So what does this mean for Kutcher’s future on ‘Two and a Half Men’? E! Online reports...

“While he has yet to sign a deal for another season, sources tell E! that Kutcher will most likely return to Two and a Half Men for another year. Kutcher would film ‘Jobs’ while on hiatus from the CBS comedy in May.”

Sarah Palin said she would never be a part of the “lamestream” media, but this week she’s using her political clout to choose sides in a different kind of war: morning news ratings. NBC’s Today Show announced Palin will be a special one-day co-host on Tuesday. Palin weighed in on the announcement.

“No matter what it is that we discuss, somehow it’s gonna kind of turn into a bit of a political discussion. It’s just absolutely paramount right now that people pay attention to what’s going on in our country.”

But the Twitter buzz isn’t exactly in Palin’s favor:

@Justin_Stangel BREAKING: “Sarah Palin to guest host NBC's Today Show.” Man, I hope that’s an April Fools joke

@JuceeRob Sarah Palin will co-host "Today" this Tuesday. Is that one of the signs of the apocalypse?

The move puts Palin in direct competition with Katie Couric’s weeklong guest-host run on Good Morning America. Couric will be keeping the desk warm for Robin Roberts. A blogger for the Washington Post says Today Show producers must be...

“...working madly to keep [Couric] from breaking their more than 16-year weekly ratings winner streak.”

Palin says she’s up for the challenge. The former Alaskan governor and current Fox News contributor told Breitbart News:

"I see this as a good opportunity to bring an independent, common-sense conservative perspective to NBC. We’re 'going rogue' and infiltrating some turf for a day.”

The competition is even more heated considering Couric’s infamous interviews with Palin during the 2008 presidential election. CNN reminds us:

“Among the details revealed in the course of those interviews was the fact that candidate Palin could not name a single newspaper or magazine that she regularly read.”

As if having Palin on the show wasn’t shaking things up enough, NBC also announced Ryan Seacrest will join the program for a special announcement Tuesday. Media outlets speculate he could be replacing Matt Lauer as co-host.

The dashcam in a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser captured a karaoke moment like no other.

The little silhouetto of a man in the grainy video — 29-year-old Robert Wilkinson.

CNN shows us the start of the squad-car serenade.

Robert Wilkinson: “ … but it doesn’t even matter.”
Reporter: “Maybe he couldn’t speak so well, but he sure managed to sing all of the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen.”
Wilkinson: “Mama … ”

The video went viral this week.

It’s approaching 4 million plays on YouTube.

But ABC reports Wilkinson was actually arrested last November ...

“ … but recently posted this video he used to defend himself in court. He got most of the lyrics right. But not so sure if that helps or hurts his case.”

The National Post explains how Wilkinson got his hands on the video in the first place.

“The video was part of the evidence disclosure package that was given to Wilkinson when he decided to defend himself in court, said RCMP spokeswoman Doris Stapleton. … He has pleaded not guilty to charges of impaired driving and refusing to take a breathalyzer. His case is set to go to court in November.”

Wilkinson also pleaded his case to the Winnipeg Free Press.

He said friends urged him to upload the video.

“Wilkinson added that he hopes the video doesn't send a bad message to young people. ‘I don't want them to think that they'll get attention for driving around drunk and getting picked up by the cops. I hope nobody ever drives drunk again.’”

The eternal question — does life imitate art, or does art imitate life?

A new tour at an Australian art gallery might not give any new insights, but a writer for news.com.au says it might uncover a thing or two.

“Melbourne artist Stuart Ringholt will lead the tour of his new exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney by getting naked - and all those who wish to join the tour must be in the buff. Of course, it’s an adults-only event on at night time outside the normal operating hours of the museum.”

The museum’s curator covers the bare essentials in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

MCA CURATOR, RACHEL KENT: “It’s a nude gallery tour at night, outside of opening hours. … all participants of the tour must be naked.”

REPORTER: “Is that legal?”

KENT: “It must be. [Melbourne artist Stuart Ringholt has] done it before, and Sydney loves nude people, if the nude beaches are anything to go by.”

The art museum is rebuffing a haughty stereotype, says one writer for The Huffington Post.

“Museums, through a variety of rules such as ‘No touching’, ‘No pictures’, ‘No food’, and ‘No running’, have garnered a reputation of being kind of stuffy. But the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney added another rule to the list … ‘No clothing’.”

The gallery’s website promises a new perspective for patrons.

“Remove the material barriers between artist and audience (literally) when you join artist Stuart Ringholt’s tour followed by a nude reception. … the work deals with themes of fear and embarrassment.”

Other reports had a more buttoned-up focus on changes to the museum itself.

Radio program, PM covered reaction to the multi-million-dollar development that took 18 months to finish.

“Some have disparaged the box-like design, comparing it to a Rubik’s Cube. Others have called it a triumph.”

Sky News reports the new wing opens to the public Thursday.

“For fear of being physically abused by Kim Kardashian’s lawyers, can we just point out that we have no idea what the reality star was doing outside this beauty clinic in LA yesterday evening. However, we do know that the salon Kim was pictured next to has the words ‘Best in Botox’ written very clearly in the window.”

The Daily Mail says Kim was probably — not — visiting the salon for botox injections.

“The high maintenance brunette perhaps headed for facial, to ensure her skin was red carpet ready for the high-profile. There is no suggestion she had Botox injections, despite the fact that the salon advertises it as a speciality. And Kim has admitted to trying the face freezer in the past.”

The reality show star was filmed having botox on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She had an allergic reaction to the injections and said on the episode that she would never try it again, at least not until she’s 40.

Whatever the spots on Kim’s face were from, they were — not — visible on the red carpet Tuesday night.

The Sun explains...

“Later on in the evening Kim turned out looking typically immaculate at The Valentino 50th Anniversary and Unveiling of The Valentino Beverly Hills Flagship on Rodeo in Beverly Hills.”

When adapting a book to a movie, who to cast for the roles almost always come under fire from the public. And that was the case when fans of Hunger Games went to the internet to protest.

“...there appears to be a group of fans who are displeased that black actors were cast to portray Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Rue (Amandla Stenberg) and Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi).”

While some of the complaints come from people who think that the characters should not be played by black actors at all, while other fans cite the book as being misportrayed. To that, a writer for Jezebel counters with some passages from writer Suzanne Collins.

“On page 45 of Suzanne Collins’s book, Katniss sees Rue for the first time:

‘…And most hauntingly, a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. She has dark brown skin and eyes...’

Later, she sees Thresh:

‘The boy tribute from District 11, Thresh, has the same dark skin as Rue, but the resemblance stops there.’

Dark skin. That is what the novelist, the creator of the series, specified. But there were plenty of audience members who were “shocked,” or confused, or just plain angry."

The reactions from fans on Twitter have some in the entertainment media on the offensive. Jezebel called the protesters racist, while US Weekly called them...

“totally clueless,” “bigoted” and “ignorant”

The exposure of the protests grew when a tumblr was created to highlight the tweets. Hunger Games Tweets was made by Peter Vidani, and was designed, as he says, to...

“...expose the Hunger Games fans on Twitter who dare call themselves fans yet don’t know a damn thing about the books.”

The blog has seen a tremendous outpouring of support in its comments, as well as discussions on race relations in the country.

The tweet that seems to be the symbol for the outcry came from @Maggie_Mcd11, which said,

“Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie.”

Nearly every report online features this tweet, but after looking at the full account, it would appear that the original user has abandoned it, leaving it to be picked up and used as a meme generator mocking the original tweet. Now, every tweet coming from it reads something like...

“why does space have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined vacuums”
and
“why does graphite have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined #2 pencils”

The Hunger Games grossed $155 million in its opening weekend.

When does a Miss Universe Canada contestant get the boot -- before ever strutting her stuff?
The Los Angeles Times has the skinny.

“As far as Miss Universe Canada is concerned, it seems the "Miss" part of the competition has to start at birth — particularly for ousted contestant Jenna Talackova, who was born male and who said she self-identified as female at age 4 and underwent gender reassignment surgery at 19.”

Born a boy.
Been a girl -- since Talackova was 19 years old.
That has created a conundrum.
Z6 News talks with a pageant official who says, it’s a clear rules violation.

“The are a set of rules, and one of them is, she has to be a naturally born female. In this case, she was not honest. She was dishonest about that.”

Buzz 60 says the rules were a little fuzzy for this pageant.

“Talackova has competed in pageants before and meets the qualification for this one by being a Canadian citizen, 18 to 27 years old.”
“Someone check the fine print for the little known, must never have been a male rule.”

The morning talk shows have been buzzing with reaction.
Here’s Australia Seven Network’s -- Sunrise on 7.

“The rules are the rules.
Ok, I think in this day and age I think it’s a bit harsh.
Could have a appealed it early.
Change the rules.
She’s got all the sort of equipment and stuff like that.”

Lots of folks seem to be supporting Talackova.
People magazine notes, a petition has been drafted to reinstate her.

“A change.org petition has netted 20,171 signatures in an effort to reverse the decision to disqualify Talackova from the the Donald Trump-owned pageant. Talackova is expected to release a statement this week after speaking with her lawyer.”

Media outlets have dubbed the opera singer the next Susan Boyle — referring to him as SuBoy, a play on Boyle’s nickname, SuBo.

A blogger for Take40 lays out the similarities between Antoine and Boyle.

“Both seemed shy and unassuming, both are self conscious about their appearance … and both do not conform to the visual stereotype of most other performers. We love him for that. “

The 17-year-old and his singing partner Charlotte Jaconelli wowed the show’s judges — even the tough-to-impress Simon Cowell.

The two became friends during vocal lessons — and they have several performances up on YouTube. Antoine says 16-year-old Jaconelli has helped him gain confidence after years of being bullied for his weight.

According to Unreality TV, Antoine has confessed he had a nervous breakdown a few months ago his family wasn’t sure he was ready to do the show at all. But...

“Insiders say that the teenager is being very closely watched and monitored by ITV staff, who fear that he will have a relapse if internet trolls start to abuse him online … As well as that, Jonathan is meeting regularly with mental health professionals... “

All four judges voted Antoine and Jaconelli through to the next round, where they’ll compete for a spot at the live semi-finals.

Fans were hungry for the opening weekend of “The Hunger Games” — ravenous, in fact. CNN reports.

“The movie raked in an estimated, get this, $155 million this weekend. The third-biggest debut in North American box office history.”

That number doesn’t account for ticket-price inflation, but the movie has grabbed the third spot — behind only the final “Harry Potter” installment and “The Dark Knight.” So the movie is doing as expected -- better than “Twilight,” but still not beating Pottermania at its peak.

But Deadline notes -- Hunger IS setting more records than expected.

“ ... the highest non-sequel opening weekend ever; and the highest March opening ever ... the highest debut single day for a non-sequel ever … the highest opening of all time outside of the Summer blockbuster season ... the 5th highest opening day ever.”

Yowza. So what do numbers and records like these mean for the struggling film industry? The LA Times reports the movie biz has now had a surprisingly strong first quarter.

“ ... uplifting news for Hollywood, which was fretting after audience turnout dropped to its lowest level in 16 years in 2011. The turnaround is in part, industry analysts say, because of many distributors' deciding to release some of their best films in winter — typically seen as a dumping ground for low-grade movies.

Variety notes “The Hunger Games” has also been game for global takeover.

“ … the pic earned an astonishing $214 million worldwide (No. 1 in virtually every market) …”

And Bloomberg reports the movie’s success could majorly affect Hollywood’s future agenda as well, because it proved female action heroes can attract major audiences — and that it all started with marketing.

“The company … didn’t market the film as a romance, even though two male characters are attracted to the film’s heroine … A film poster … features a gender-neutral image of a burning pin ... Commercials for the picture aired on programs popular with men, such as college basketball tournaments, as well as with young women …”

A sequel to “The Hunger Games,” which is based on a popular book series, is already set for late 2013.

Get the ice cubes prepped, the bitters primed and your Canadian club unshelved -- "Mad Men" is back after some backstage chaos. MSNBC introduces us.

“After a 17 month wait, Mad Men returns for its fifth season."

Roger Sterling: “We live in troubling times.”

Don Draper: “We do? Who couldn’t be happy with this?"

That’s what plenty of fans are saying after a long break from the series. Fans, including, it appears — Charlie Rose — who gives us a rundown of the show’s acclaim.

“The AMC drama about a NY ad agency in the 1960s premiered in 2007. Since then, it’s won the emmy for outstanding drama four years in a row. Perhaps no other television program around has had as deep a cultural impact.”

But for some time, it looked like the show might not have come back. Bogged down in contract negotiations, Mad Men was delayed after creator and writer Matthew Weiner had a very public contract dispute about cost-cutting measures which would have included character cuts with the show’s network AMC. He now tells CNN.

‘The show always had a future, but whether I was going to be a part of it was definitely in question … ‘I walked away, and it was a hard thing to do.’

He came back, but more drama followed. The series took heat for a billboard marketing campaign some say hit too close to home for the New-York-set show. Some felt minimalist banners erected on city buildings across the nation inappropriately evoked 9/11. Esquire writes.

“AMC stands weirdly accused of making reference to 9/11, in its promotional poster for Mad Men's fifth season... On the one hand, the poster is merely a continuation of the art that has accompanied the show since its inception...At the same time, the poster... seems out to remind viewers that the show is really about the Falling Man... that for all its American-Century trappings, it's set squarely in the age of American decline.”

Few plot details have been revealed about the fifth season — the Huffington Post’s Maureen Ryan notes — that’s because Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner famously keeps the series under closely-guarded lock and key.

“...it's hard to resist the urge to tweak creator Matthew Weiner's insistence on absolutely no spoilers ever -- and to him, every single thing you could say about the show is a spoiler (as he said in not one, but two admonitory notes sent to the media before the season premiere). I expect hired thugs to break into my house for telling you that the following words will be uttered in the Season 5 premiere: ‘baked beans.’”

We imagine Old-Fashioneds will be back, too. Hopefully, Weiner won’t chase us down for that revelation.

The queen of reality families gets flour-bombed at her own perfume roll-out. Kim Kardashian went from brunette -- to white blonde with the shake of a sack. Here’s NBC’s Today Show...

“The woman who allegedly threw the flour bomb on Kardashian was detained but later released. Kardashian told deputies she did not want to press charges.”

E! Online has behind the scenes footage of the woman’s apprehension -- and subsequent release after Kardashian refused to file charges.
E! reports, while PETA would not confirm the woman was a member of its organization, it also delivered E! the following statement....

"’PETA has tried everything from polite letters to public protests, but Kim Kardashian has not been moved by the news that animals are beaten, electrocuted, and even skinned alive for real fur garments,’ read the statement. ‘Whoever threw that flour may reach her when our polite appeals did not.’"

The Washington Post notes, Kardashian has had a history with PETA.

“Kardashian has been photographed wearing fur at public events many times... In November, PETA placed a billboard in West Hollywood showing Kardashian in a fur vest next to a picture of live foxes with the words, ‘The babies miss their mother. Is she on your back?’”

Most reaction to this dust-up has been humorous. Some -- shock. And then -- there’s this from sisters Khloe and Kourtney, as reported by Celebrity Cafe.

(Khloe) “I wish I was with my sister tonight. I bet you that woman wouldn't have dared tried a thing...” (Kourtney) “Classy to flour bomb my sister at her charity event helping women. I wonder if they would have dared thrown the flour at my hormonal and pregnant self!”

And then, there are the skeptics who say, this seemed awfully orchestrated, like the Hollywood Gossip.

“What does it say that a tiny percentage of the THG staff wonders whether Kim concocted this flap on her own for the sake of publicity and sympathy? Just the obvious, we suppose.”

Boy band “One Direction” has become the UK’s first act to top American Charts with their very first album, “Up All Night.” Not even the Beatles did that. ITN has more...

“They’ve already conquered the UK but now the One Direction boys are making history stateside. They’ve gone straight in at number one in the US Billboard 200 charts.”

Who are they you ask? The teenage heart throbs formed a band on the UK X-Factor stage back in 2010. In the space of just two years they have gone from regular teenage boys to a growing worldwide phenomenon.

Following the record breaking debut, the lads took to Twitter to thank their US fans...

“Hi guys! This news is incredibly humbling and I feel so lucky to be part of this..Would be nowhere without you. Thank you so much!! GAAAHHH!”

Simon Cowell also posted...

“I couldn’t be happier for One Direction, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world.”

But it appears the boys may not be handling their sudden rise to fame all that well. STV quotes 18-year-old band member Harry...

“I get ill all the time – it’s all the travelling and long distance flights...Four of us had to have vitamin jabs because we were run down...We miss our families, we miss our friends. We get homesick, massively so.”

Not everyone believes “One Direction” or fellow up-and-coming British boyband “The Wanted” will last in the US music scene. Yahoo quotes Joey from the “New Kids on the Block”...

"The odds are against both One Direction and The Wanted — neither of them are going to work in America — it hasn't happened in 50 years so why now?”

But CBS says boy bands are back for good!

“It seems like we can never say goodbye, bye, bye to boy bands. A decade after 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys dominated the entertainment world, boy bands have returned and are making a comeback.”

To celebrate their breakthrough in the US, the boys revealed details of their first North American Tour. Tickets go on sale Friday.

Are you a crime television series über-fan? CSI: Crime Scene Investigation television series creator Anthony Zuiker has announced a new project. In collaboration with Yahoo!, Zuiker is set to release a feature film online this fall.

The Celebrity Cafe says the film Cybergeddon is a...

“... 90-minute film [which] will center on the threat of cyber crime and will only be available on Yahoo in separate installments beginning this fall. Mike Chapman will pen the script.”

Zuiker told The Hollywood Reporter that releasing the film online is appealing to the current generation. He says...

“We're in the generation where behaviors have shifted as to how people consume content on devices and we must be part of trailblazing the future.”

So what is the big advantage of releasing online? Deadline wrote in their report that releasing the feature film online exposes it to many more viewers at the same time and Yahoo! currently holds the benchmark for online webseries success...

“Cybergeddon” will engage Yahoo!’s worldwide audience of 700 million unique visitors, through an immersive storytelling, social media and gaming experience. Yahoo! sets the bar for best-in-class original video programming with 21 out of the top 25 most-watched online series’...”

The release of a feature film online is a first for Yahoo! reports The Wrap. Yahoo also has an animated web series from Tom Hanks in the works. In an interview for The Wrap, Erin McPherson -- the head of Yahoo!’s video department, says...

“I prefer to call it an online blockbuster … There will be different ways for the audience to explore the content … Imagine watching ‘CSI’ and getting to go through a virtual evidence book.”

Keep an eye out for the release expected in the fall.

He may not be leading the pack, but Ron Paul is still making headlines. He appeared on The Tonight Show and when asked by host Jay Leno why he didn’t accept Secret Service protection, here’s what he had to say,

“Well it’s a form of welfare, you know you’re having the taxpayers pay to take care of somebody. And I would think I should pay for my own protection.”

He followed up that conversation by saying his Secret Service nickname would be “Bulldog,” for how tenaciously he would go after the Fed. A writer for Reason praised Paul’s performance on the show.

“Paul did well during his two full segments of the show, though he didn't really fall back on trying to sell himself and his philosophy to undecided voters very vigorously. He was cheerful, and reacted jovially to a visual gag involving dueling photos of him and Santorum shirtless … and Paul's head imposed on a clip of a kung fu master kicking ass.”

But his comments weren’t all just fun and games. Since the other three GOP candidates received Secret Service protection in recent weeks, a journalist for The Atlantic Wire says the comment was a well-timed political move.

“For Paul, denying Secret Service protection is a smart way to draw attention to his message of fiscal responsibility … [I]n this race, Secret Service protection has served as an indicator of popularity … connecting his more popular opponents to that dreaded w-word and painting them as freeloaders might be one of Paul's best options.”

A writer for The American Prospect agreed there was more to the comment — like using a conservative code word.

“...when Ron Paul says ‘welfare,’ what he means is ‘an undeserved government handout.’ Welfare was established as part of a safety net to insure that people in poverty wouldn't spiral into absolute destitution, but today … the word ‘welfare’ only comes up when someone wants to characterize a benefit as undeserved.”

Ron Paul chose to go on The Late Show rather than follow the campaign trail to Illinois. But he’ll be back on the trail in the run up to the Louisiana primary.

Comedian Aziz Ansari released his newest comedy special Tuesday. But instead of selling it via DVD or iTunes, it’s available on his website — and the cost? Just $5.

The Parks and Recreation star filmed his "Dangerously Delicious" stand-up special last summer. The downloadable version is 60-minutes, uncut and uncensored (Source: NBC)

In the promo, Ansari jokes — similar stand-up specials on DVD sell for 20 big ones.

“Think about all the cool things you could buy with the $15 you just saved. [Shows list: Several Small Bags of Cashews and/or Almonds, A Nice Beach Towel, Nelly's SweatSuit Album ('Sweat' disc only,) 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' (Paperback,) A Bag of Screws, A $15 Downpayment on Anything. ]”

This comes just a few months after comedian Louis C.K’s made a similar move. In December, he sold his special for just $5 — a special that cost $250,000 to produce. According to Yahoo! News...

“The growing movement in comedy toward direct distribution over the Web is a direct result of the overwhelming success of Louis C.K.’s experiment, which (brought in) more than $1.1 million.”

Online piracy has been a big problem for the entertainment industry. VentureBeat blogger Sean Ludwig says — C.K. may have sold a lot of copies, but he took a risk by not using software that prevents pirating. Ansari is taking that same risk — but Ludwig has why this move might actually work to their advantages.

“...people pirate so much because of all the dumb restrictions companies put in place on a product, consumers would be fine to buy (the specials) at (a) reasonable price.”

BetaBeat notes the online distribution method has worked before — but only with big-name comedians.

“If you can get away with it—which Mr. C.K. and Mr. Ansari are poised to do—it’s kind of a genius move, but it really only works if you have enough fans willing to shell out directly for your work.”

Even so, not all famous funnymen are willing to stake everything on the Internet. Jim Gaffigan announced he was doing the same thing for his next release, but admitted if it flopped, he would still be able to license his special to Comedy Central. He told The New York Times...

“‘It’s a gamble with the crops,’... ‘This is one harvest. You’re going to use some piece of equipment that could make it twice as productive.’”

Cowabunga, dude! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are headed back to the big screen and this time “Transformers” mastermind Michael Bay is at the helm. Stuff We Like got the mega-producer on camera talking about the reboot.

MICHAEL BAY: “These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”

Did you catch that? Bay said the turtles are from an “alien race” -- not mutants. AMC Movie News’ John Campea says, huh?

JOHN CAMPEA: “If you’re gonna make Superman, you don’t have him from somewhere other than Krypton. If you’re going to make Batman, you make sure his parents were murdered in front of him as a child. These are core, central issues to the mythologies.”

If Bay makes Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo aliens, he’s erasing a 30-year-old origin story. Though, Entertainment Weekly says...

“…we might sound a wee bit ridiculous when we cry out, ‘I can’t believe Bay says they’re aliens when they’re obviously derived from radioactive slime!’”

Canada’s National Post looks at the bright side.

“It may come as a relief to some, that at least the franchise hasn’t gone the ultra-realism route and commissioned the BBC to follow real turtles around the sewer of a nuclear plant...”

And the Washington Post is giving Bay the benefit of the doubt on this one.

“Of course, Bay may have misspoken when he used the phrase ‘alien race’ and everyone is getting worked up for naught.”

Bay’s new take will be live action - like the early ‘90s films - but won’t hit theaters until December 2013.

What happens when you tick off one of the biggest movie stars and one of the top celebrity chefs at the same time?

The New York Times is finding that out first hand after publishing the editorial, “I Was a Cookbook Ghostwriter.”

“Rachael Ray alone has published thousands of recipes in her cookbooks and magazines since 2005. How, you might ask, do they do it? The answer: they don’t.”

The author suggests Ray and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others, don’t write their own cookbooks. But the stars are fighting back--

Gwyneth tweeted -- “Love @nytimes dining section but this weeks facts need checking. No ghost writer on my cookbook, I wrote every word myself.”

While Ray went on a mini rant... Before tweeting -- “Good for @GwynethPaltrow who also noted how wrong @NYTimes got it...”

Both stars say their alleged ghostwriters are just “food assistants” who help with creating recipes and food styling. But The Huffington Post asks, isn’t that the same thing?

“… it seems as if there are discrepancies between the New York Times version of what a ghostwriter is, and what Ray and Paltrow call a ghostwriter. The titles are a bit blurred...”

So it comes down to semantics. Even if she is using a ghost writer, the LA Times points out why Paltrow would want to cover it up.

“Many of the sections … are accompanied with sweeping narratives from Paltrow's own life. Then there's the text on ingredients and how to execute the recipes. Quite frankly, all that gray area crowds our palate.”

The Times has yet to respond to Paltrow and Ray’s claims. But E! Online says, so what?

“The funny irony here is that Paltrow's tome hit The New York Times' best-seller list, cracking the top 10 shortly after it was published last April.”

Paltrow is writing a follow-up book -- assisted by her alleged ghostwriter -- set to hit shelves later this year

If Kate Middleton was ever in Prince William’s shadow, she’s out in the sun now. The Duchess of Cambridge gave her first royal solo speech Monday at the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, while her husband Prince William is deployed in the Falklands.

“I feel enormously proud to be a part of East Anglians and to see the wonderful, life-changing work that you do.”

Kate serves as patron for East Anglia’s, as did her husband’s late mother, Diana. Leading up to the speech, ABC News said the people of Great Britain were anxious.

“Today’s nailbiter isn’t so much what Kate will say, but how she will say it. ‘Is she too posh? Is she not posh enough?’”

ABC explains the public has only heard Kate speak a few times. According to CNN, this could be because the Duchess isn’t fond of public speaking.

“She has done two TV interviews and didn't seem to enjoy either of them. Speaking live in front of an internationally televised audience is even more nerve-wracking.”

Despite good reaction from the public, TVNZ reported that members of Kate’s coaching staff weren’t as thrilled.

“Her personal branding coach gave her a seven out of ten for her performance...Catherine's voice coach, however, said she needs to learn to use her body when she speaks and know how to be herself.”

Nevertheless, others at the hospital were pleased with Kate’s visit. The Telegraph quoted the mother of one of the children Kate spoke to.

“‘It was lovely,’” said Mrs Jennings. “‘The Duchess was so friendly and approachable, and seemed really caring.’”

It’s been a trending headline in recent months — the decline of the movie star. Media reporting big names aren’t big box office draws any more — calling the phenomenon ‘the fall of star power’ and ‘death of the movie star.’

The New York Times’ Brooks Barnes summed up 2011 as a year of disappointment at the box office, partially citing …

“...failed efforts by some younger stars to become bigger box-office draws. Ryan Reynolds never took off as ‘Green Lantern’ … Russell Brand missed in a remake of ‘Arthur,’ as did Taylor Lautner in ‘Abduction.’”

But with a hit movie on Hollywood’s hands, those headlines are changing. “21 Jump Street” was No. 1 at the box office in its opening weekend, and media are hailing Channing Tatum as a rising megastar — he has two hit movies out — “Jump Street” and “The Vow.”

And now, Barnes is calling 31-year-old Tatum one of Hollywood’s “best hopes” for a new male superstar. He says choosing “Jump Street” after “The Vow” was a calculated move to broaden Tatum’s fan base.

“‘For over a decade now Hollywood has failed to mint a new heavyweight… ‘Part of [Tatum’s] appeal is old-fashioned movie star charisma … ‘ said Amy Pascal, the co-chairwoman of Sony Pictures Entertainment … ‘But it’s more than that. He has now shown that he can hold a gun, kiss a girl and tell a joke.’”

And a writer for WMAQ credits Tatum’s management of both his career and personal choices. Tatum is producing most of his movies now, and while he’s married to his ‘Step Up’ co-star, remains enticing to female audiences.

“‘Since you don’t see them out a lot together, you can almost forget that he’s married – it’s kind of appealing,’ says [Hollywood Life’s Dennis Warner].”

And 2012 could become even bigger for Tatum. He’s got two more movies slated for release this year -- “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” and “Magic Mike.” The movie star just might be back.

<![CDATA[Will 'The Hunger Games' Beat 'Twilight' or 'Harry Potter'?]]> Mon, 19 Mar 2012 00:00:01 -0500

After months of anticipation, “The Hunger Games” hits theaters this Friday — March 23rd.

The book the movie is based on has sold millions of copies, so the films are expected to be a hit. But the question now -- how big will this first movie be? Can the franchise live up to the standards set by “Twilight” and “Harry Potter”?

A writer for The Hollywood Reporter tells CBS “The Hunger Games” appeals to a broader audience than the “Twilight” series.

“The ‘Twilight’ movie skewed very female because really, at its heart, it was a love triangle romance. There is a love triangle in ‘The Hunger Games’ but there is also some violence … so it will appeal to older audiences and will also appeal to young men, where ‘Twilight’ was really about the girls who wanted to go see cute guys.”

A writer for Starpulse seems to agree -- pointing out sinister undertones set “The Hunger Games” apart.

“Like the Twilight series, The Hunger Games features a love triangle between the three sexy young stars. Unlike in Twilight, however, the romance takes a back-seat to themes of loyalty, oppression, and the sinister undertones of today's reality-TV culture. "

As for comparisons to “Harry Potter” ---E! argues this first “Hunger Games” movie won’t surpass the box office of the first “Potter” film.

“ … The first Potter film was a bring-the-kids-and-uncles, PG-rated crowd-pleaser. The Hunger Games is a PG-13 tale of teen-vs.-teen slaughter … If 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone had sold tickets at 2011 prices ($7.93 instead of yesteryear's $5.65), then, assuming attendance remained the same, the movie would have posted a $126 million debut. That kind of performance is on the upper edge of expectations for The Hunger Games.”

The numbers won’t be in until Friday. But The Los Angeles Times says Lionsgate has crafted a $45 million marketing campaign that employs an unusual and risky strategy — the ads don’t show teenagers in actual combat, which is a major part of the movie. Still, that might not be a bad thing.

“At a time when audiences complain that trailers and ads too often give away the entire plots of movies, [Lionsgate’s marketing president] wanted to take a ‘less is more’ approach … Some at Lionsgate were also concerned that out-of-context shots of teenagers hunting and stabbing one another and snapping one another's necks could alienate potential viewers.”

Is Whitney Houston’s daughter engaged to the man known as her ‘adoptive brother’? Reports are varied, and media are dishing out advice one way or the other. WSVN reports.

“Bobbi Kristina seen with a rock on her finger this week and engaging in some PDA with Nick Gordon, who Houston raised since he was 12.”

Just a few days ago, Gordon denied reports the two were even dating to ABC News. But the same day this report was published ---

TMZ posted footage of the pair kissing and holdings hands in Atlanta.

And as of Saturday, 22-year-old Gordon was saying, “no comment.”

“We heard you and Bobbi Kristina got engaged, is it true?”
“Are you dating, at least?”

Several outlets are reporting the ring Brown was seen wearing on her engagement finger once belonged to her mother. People Magazine calls the news of a possible engagement “baffling,” and writes …

“One source tells PEOPLE, ‘Yes, they are engaged, but the family is trying to coax her away from it.’ Another source … does believe that Brown's grandmother, Cissy Houston, ‘is worried.’”

People reports there’s no evidence Houston ever officially adopted Gordon. 19-year-old Brown and Gordon are now living in Houston’s home. Media seem to be taking two sides — either supporting Bobbi Kristina because of her grief …

“Kind of an unusual situation there, but we just wish Bobbi Kristina the best. She’s had a rough go of things here lately.”

Or posting headlines like these, calling an engagement a ‘bad idea.’ Hollywood Life spoke with a psychotherapist, who says …

“[Bobbi Kristina] is too raw and too vulnerable at this time to make any major life decisions, like marriage.”

And does Bobbi Kristina have a comment? She’s been re-Tweeting Tweets from followers that seem to support the idea of her and Gordon being together -- messages like this one...

“@ndgordon & @REALbkBrown do what ya'll do! Don't let anyone stop ya'll! U were raised well. People hate on a evrydy basis so jus keep movin.”

Houston died February 11th.

Ro’s got to go – that according to Oprah. The media mogul announced she’s canceling Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show on the Oprah Winfrey Network. E! News has Winfrey’s statement.

“‘A new network launch is always a challenge. I’m grateful to Rosie and the dedicated Rosie show team for giving it their all.’ The 49-year-old echoes her boss, saying ‘I loved working with Oprah in the amazing city of Chicago.’”

The New York Times runs through the ratings that led to O’Donnell’s demise.

“It had its premiere on Oct. 10 and drew less than 500,000 viewers. That number leveled off at around 200,000 on any given night. Ms. O’Donnell acknowledged the ratings shortfalls in a statement on Friday night.”

Deadline suggests Oprah should’ve seen this coming from the start – O’Donnell is just too polarizing.

“The stations groups that passed on a daytime syndicated talk show Rosie O’Donnell was shopping two years ago are probably having a ‘we told you so’ moment today … OWN … tried to rehabilitate O’Donnell’s image and channel more of her 1990s ‘queen of nice’ bubbly persona than the darker, more controversial one we’ve seen…”

Newsday applauds Winfrey, saying she’s finally doing what’s right for OWN.

“Nevertheless, this is a business, and when no one is watching your show - except people on Pluto, and nothing against people on Pluto who I am sure are all very nice - then the business dictates that the end must come.”

And a writer for Forbes thinks O’Donnell will be the real winner here.

“Frankly, she’s well rid of it … The OWN network is a nightmare that won’t end. No one can find it on their cable boxes. And Chicago? It’s not Rosie’s town. She is a New Yorker, through and through … So the whole recipe was a failure.”

The final episode of ‘The Rosie Show’ airs March 30th. OWN hasn’t announced how it will replace the talker, but O’Donnell’s still under contract through 2013.
